Passport 2910BH + equal-i-zer

I’m trying to determine which Equal-i-zer hitch to buy for a new Passport 2910BH I have on order. The TT has a dry weight of 5354 and advertised dry tongue weight of 725 (13.54% of TT weight). There are not many options on these Passports, so this is pretty much what is on the sticker of the actual units. I’ve done a lot of searching and haven’t been able to conclude if I should get the 1000lb tongue weight or 1200lb tongue weight Equal-i-zer. I don’t expect us to be heavy packers – 1000lbs of gear is likely plenty. Nonetheless, if my TT weight ends up at 6500, then 13% would be 845 lbs. 15% would be 975 lbs. If I use the GVWR of 7200, 15% would exceed 1000 lb tongue weight. I will be pulling with a 2010 F150 max tow 157” wheelbase. In general, the equal-i-zer web page recommends bumping up to 1200lb bars when the tongue weight exceeds 900lbs. Below that, it recommends the 1000 lb bars. It doesn’t factor in tow vehicle at all; it is strictly computing based on TT tongue weight and weight in the back of the pickup.

To help me decide, I’m hoping some of you can tell me what the measured tongue weight of your loaded 2910BH is, and/or if you have a 2910BH and have an equal-i-zer which bars do you have and how does it tow? Ideally examples from a ½ ton pickup or an SUV would be best! If I had a ¾ ton I would get the 1000lb bars without much thought, but part of me thinks the ½ ton would do better with 1200 lb bars, but I don’t want a ride that is too stiff either. I have to buy the hitch prior to picking up the trailer so I cannot make measurements post purchase and then decide. Thanks for your help!

I have a round bar WD hitch with separate friction on my 2910bh with a TV 2007 Yukon Xl Denali. On longer runs I add a second friction control. It has worked pretty well and have done RI to Myrtle Beach run but I am going to upgrade this season. I am looking at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 10,000 lbs GTW, 1,000 lbs TW (http://www.rvwholesalers.com/catalog...h-14-2927.html) . I have seen them on the web for around $450. Also might had a pair of Firestone Coil-Rite Air Helper Spring Kit to TV

Do you happen to know the real tongue weight of your 2910BH? I started this same thread on rv.net and the consensus seems to be 1200lb bars from the folks there (although not specifically 2910BH owners). Any reason you are thinking the 1000lb is best?

The equalizer web site has a hitch calculator, takes into account gross trailer weight, tongue weight and cargo weight behind rear axle. I use a 12,000/1,200 lb for towing a Outback 301 BQ. TV 2012 F-150 S/crew, ecoboost, HD payload & towing package.

My 2910 loaded for camping, weighed in at 6900 lbs. with the tanks empty. I plan to weigh the tounge this spring when the weather breaks so I know the actual weight since it is now set up the way we waht it. with that being said I upgraded from a 1000 lb pro series hitch to a 1200 lb. dual cam set up last spring. The 1000 lb bars would bend a little when adjusted to level the truck. The 1200 lb bars don't. I would go with the heavier bars.More would be better than not enough. IMHO.

Thanks Muddynoll. Wow your weight is 1500 lbs over dry with empty tanks! Do you pack alot or is the dry weight perhaps more than advertised ?

Yeah, I Know. I was suprised too.Just to be clear the propane was full. The fresh water , Grey , and Black tanks were empty. I still have lots of compartment space left too and Im just a couple hundred pounds under the GVWR. I don't think I'm packed that heavy. Just what we need for the trip. Fortunately I dont really have anything else that I need to put in it right now, but I'm sure something will come to mind. Keep in mind dry weight does'nt include propane or the battery.I think there may be some other options that are'nt included in the Dry Weight listing. I should also include that my tounge weight is approx. 30 lbs. heavier than yours because I mounted an aluminum tool box behind the propane tanks which houses the battery and the hitch components when not in use. We went from Pgh. to Orlando and back in November without any problems. We are really happy with this camper.
