Satelite dish

I have an ongoing subscription to a dish network from a previous home. I have the box and remote that goes in the house. Would we be able to rig up an unused dish on our current home to use in our fifth wheel? I have seen lots of dishs that are set up on stands next to rvs. Are those "finds" or are they purchased directly from the company?

Yes, you can either buy a dish or if you have an extra one. We are camping and watching direct tv. We bring our box from home and we had an extra dish and bought a tripod of off ebay

Yes you can use your home box and dish. You can purchase a "roof top antana trapod" from most any Radio Shack or electronic store for about $20.00. Purchase a steel fence post from any hardware store. Use this to mount your dish on, getting your angle and such from the setup menu. After a few times of setting it up, you will be like the "Pro" that installed it in your house.

Yes, you need to have a dish from the same provider that your receiver is.

Yes. I use the Dish 500 which is standard definition only. I got my kit from this site.

Talking Antenna

Hey Cal & Marianne
Check out the upside down antenna stand. It breaks down real easy for storage. You also can buy a small antenna dish in a hat box from camping world. Every two weeks when we return home for a few days to mow the lawn we just call dish and have them change our zip code back to where ever we are at and then we can watch the local channels. When we return to our hosting gig I just call them back to change it to where ever we happen to be. It takes 5 minutes.

dish network

look into buying dish tailgator, you can have tv signal in 5-10 minutes and it will take longer to set up dish than that and find signal will take much longer.
tailgator does require updated reciever , check with local dish dealer, installer.
Mine was a free upgrade, giving me much better signal no searching for signal and at a cost of $350.00

Thumbs up Wrong

Well Jerry, I can set my dish up in 5 to 10 minutes without a problem. It just takes a little practice and my dish cost way less. Hey if you got the money go for it!

I do exactly what you want to do. I have any extra box that I pay for monthly and when I'm at the "Casa De Half Wide" I use it with an extra permanent dish 'dish'. My neighbors at the camp use a portable 'dish' dish. Just be aware that the local stations you get will be those that match the 'home' address of the box and not where you are .

Not necessiarly so, the broadcast scope is limited for the "Local" stations.
When I moved from Southwest new mexico to Central Utah, I had to get
the 'powers that be' to re-establish me with the Utah locals.
Out here in the vastness of the West they have translaters (re-broadcast),
towers all over the place. Ergo, Salt lake City local stations cover the whole frickin' State. It's the largest 'market'. In New Mexico (#2 market size),
even though I'm closer to El Paso, Tx. (90 miles away), my locals are from Albuquerque, over 200 miles away.
Also, in Utah I could get all of my Sat. and locals from the 101 Sat. here in N.M. I have to use both the 101 and 119 (119 is for the Local sation's).
So, if ya want 'local' news and weather call Directv and they will re position you in the computer. Or you can get the long distance networks (Ny. or LA.),
and use the Weather channel for the forcast...

Hank,
Will they do only one of the "smart cards"? As it is, if I don't use it for 10 days/2 weeks I have to call them just to reset it PIA!

Talking Local Channels

I change my Dish network every couple weeks for local channels. I go into the setup menu and change the zip code, then I call Dish and tell them I want the local channels for the area that I am in. I have to give them a physical address of where I'm at (and they don't really know where) and in 5 minutes or less I get the local channels. It's a free service. I also found out that when I first get to where I'm going that a lot of the time I will receive the local channels from my home address if I with in a certain area 250 miles in some cases.
When Hosting I watch the local channels and when we go home to mow lawns or what ever I change it back. Very simple, one phone call.

Ruffus,
I've got 4 Dish receivers. 3 at the house, 1 at Casa De Half Wide. Will Dish just change the smart card in one receiver or will all of them change?
