all I have to do to increase my coasting distance is touch the throttle just enough to keep the EB off until I want it on.

3500 Dodges in RV hotshot service are seeing upwards of 200K miles on one set of breaks with exhaust brake used 100%.

If the Ex brake is not used A LOT you will have problems with the variable vane turbo(which is what acts as the brake). The best way to avoid problems in this area is to use the brake all the time.
