That's the same thing the transmission shops say about Dodge

I'll admit having the DEF tank fill under the hood is an inconvenience. I can only assume that GM did that to avoid fill up issue nightmares that I've heard about where people accidentally add DEF to the fuel tank or fuel to the DEF tank. However, GM did put the DEF fill behind the fuel door on the vans, so I can't really say for sure what the thought process was. Considering it's only added a couple times per year it's not that big of an inconvenience. I typically pull into the truck stop pumps and top off the tank prior to a big trip, never have to worry about it during trips that way.

There's something to dislike about every brand. I like my Cummins more than I like your Allison. You're correct about Chrysler auto transmissions. That's why I have the NV5600 6-speed stick. The jury is still out on the 68RFE and the aisin, but it looks like maybe the chronic issues may have been solved.

I might even buy a Ford if it had a Cummins and an Allison.

68RFE is putting up with 800 ft/lbs in my truck (factory). It can be a little clunky when cold and no manual shift (unlike the Asian, I'm told).

I love the Cummins. I haven't driven the Chevy, but the Ford would really rev up a bit. I bought the Cummins as it's mechanically simpler... At least that's my theory.. :-)

All of these trucks should last a LONG time. At least for what we pay for them.

Your a funny guy! It's been a few years since I participated in the brand wars. Used to really enjoy that. But I believe I'll stick with my dodge, er, RAM 3500. Nothing beats inline diesel power, period.

I remember in the late 90's that someone compared a Cummins to a Powersmoke...uhh...stroke saying that the Cummins had half the moving parts and twice the bearing surface area compared to the PS. Yes, mechanically simpler.

Interesting, I can shift my 68RFE manually

I love the Cummins / Aisin combo, but can't deal with the Fiat they are in. [emoji846]

Mine is a St. Louis Chrysler. There are advantages to having older vehickles. It may not have blingy whistles and bells, but it does have a horn and it tows.

Previous CTD had the six speed manual and I liked it and had no trouble at all with it or the clutch in 200,000 miles. However, with 26,000 miles on the new truck w/ Aisin, would never go back to a manual. Plus I can get the DW to drive this truck on occasion where she would not touch the old one.

I think I can limit to upshift, but can't shift it manually. Am I doing it wrong? (2015)

By using the +/- switch you can limit to whatever gear you choose

Thanks for quoting the manual.. As I indicated, that limits the upshift / current gear. I thought the Aisin had a manual shift mode (IE, hold gear or force upshift), but I was mistaken.

The manual was for the 68RFE, I thought that was what the question referred to. I don't know what the Aisin shift program will do. I guess I'm confused with your question, I manually shift mine all the time to limit speed or apply engine braking in the mountains where I live.

Manual shift is like "tiptronic" in a porsche or DSG in a VW. Basically, it's manual shifting without a clutch. You can tell it what get to go in and stay in... The computer will override if you do something dumb like try to down-shift over redline, etc.

The 68RFE seems to have the standard truck "upshift limit" - meaning it'll limit top gear, which can be useful, but isn't quite as nice as being able to command and hold a specific gear...

It looks like the Aisin (per the internet) is the same way as the 68RFE, so I had it wrong..

I do like the manual shift option on my Ford transmission.

My wife's Volvo has manual shift by sliding the shift lever to the left, then pushing the stick forward or aft to upshift or downshift. Great feature, and better than steering wheel paddles when steering on a winding mountain road. Japanese transmission, BTW.

Manual shift should be a common feature in autos, IMO.

Yup.

My Ford has the +- buttons on the shifter. When in "D" (drive), these act as a gear limiter... whereas it shifts normally except will not go above said gear. Behaves the same way in tow/haul mode with the slightly different programming. When in "M" (manual), these are used to manually shift gears. What I find most useful about "M" is preventing automatic downshifts. When towing, it is nice to give it gas and keep it in the current gear.

In all cases, the computer does limit you from doing something stupid that would exceed redline... or trying to take off from a stop in 6th gear, etc.

It may do that, not sure as I been guilty of not paying attention and put the shifter in "M" then hit the RPM limiter pulling out into traffic a couple of times... BTW you can also hit the shutdown at 98 mph in 6th. Lol
