5th wheel hitch grease
Bought my first 5er. Pulled a tt coast to coast. 50 years ago drove an army semi from time to time so familiar with the process. But in the army used a lot of grease. Everywhere.
I would like to keep grease out of my RAM. Ordered Reese 83001 for the plate. With this all I need to grease is the kingpin?

Now that I look, I didn’t realize that you were talking about a lube plate, not “grease”. I suppose the Reese is as good as any, just might cost more for the name. Sorry

Not a problem. 50 years ago not sure there was Teflon. Just trying to make sure the only grease is the pin itself.

I know Teflon existed in the 70’s. I painted airplanes and used it on wing flaps.

One huge advantage of the teflon disc, at least for me; I use a hitch cover over my B&W Companion when not towing, so there is no grease to deal with when I cover it up.

These lube plates are actually made of nylon. They may have some silicone or PTFE in the formulation to help make them more lubricious, but they are mostly nylon.

Whatever they are made of, they work and last a long time.

Using a disk saves a lot of mess.
As you have already mentioned the kingpin needs to be greased.
Check the instructions for your hitch, there are probably other points on the hitch that need to be lubricated.

Disk is the way to go. No grease at all. I keep pivot points on the hitch itself lubed with WD-40. Just a squirt and done. No mess. I keep WD40 in the camper all the time just for this purpose.

I'd recommend a silicone spray rather than WD40. WD40 is also a great dust/dirt magnet. WD40 makes a good silicone spray that can be used anywhere without collecting dirt.

If it's going to be "brrrrr" temperatures when you install it on the king pin, keep the disc in the house overnight so it's warm. If it's cold, it won't flex and you stand a chance of buying another disc before you get to even hitch up with that one. That's why I am on my second disc.... Cold weather makes for brittle plastic makes for "prolonged use of 4 letter words"....

Yes, where the kingpin contacts the cross-block bar needs lubed.
Disc for plate-to-plate contact, but we have never seen anything for a clean pin lube.
