I agree with above , only time will tell how serious it is.

If you get the flu, it’s like .001% chance you will die.
If you get Covid, it’s currently 3+%. I think the facts will show it COULD be more deadly than the flu, especially if you have lung issues. I would rather get the flu.

Meanwhile I spend my time woodworking, fishing and Boondocking and have no plans to go to Disneyland or casinos. No change in plans here.

When you look back at history, when we first discovered that the flu was a virus and had NO vaccine or treatment for it, the mortality from influenza was significantly greater than it is today and very closely mirrored the mortality rates we see with Covid-19.

Essentially, the reason that influenza is less "deadly than Covid-19" is because we do have 50+ years of treatment and prevention for that virus.

There's simply no way to compare a viral infection with 50 years of medical knowledge and multiple treatment regimens against a viral infection for which we have no or limited medical knowledge or "proven" treatment and compare them "side by side"... Heck, we don't even know yet whether Covid-19 will weaken with warmer weather, which is a known response with all the influenza strains.

I'd suggest that if influenza were "discovered a month ago" that the mortality rates would likely be very similar to any other recently discovered virus for which we have no treatment regimen. But, because we've all been vaccinated against multiple strains of influenza, that "herd immunity" helps reduce the "death rate from flu" far more than to just suggest that "Covid-19 is more deadly by 2% based on "what" ????

There's ample reason to be cautious and there's virtually NO reason to be paranoid about any current health risks from viral infection.

ADDED: In today's NHS briefing, one of the committee members explained it this way: When you calculate the "KNOWN/CONFIRMED" cases of Covid-19, the mortality rate approaches 3%. When you consider all of the "minor cases that weren't confirmed or even tested, all the cases that were never even diagnosed, the mortality rate from this current viral strain is between 0.01% and 0.1%, very similar to what we're seeing with the seasonal influenza case studies."

Ya'll see Tito's vodka tweeted out (and went viral) today:

"Per the CDC, hand sanitizer needs to contain at least 60% alcohol. Tito's Handmade Vodka is 40% alcohol, and therefore does not meet the current recommendation of the CDC. Please see attached for more information."

I find this thread interesting. Not so much for ways to avoid a contagion but of folks reactions to a possible, unknown, blown out of proportion threat.

The coronavirus originated in China. It "sort of" got serious in a backward, 3rd world country in an overcrowded city where folks have 3rd world medical protections; but yet, the entire world acts as if the black plague has now gone viral across the planet....help me!!! If you've noted the last thing I saw is that the issue in Wuhan has now abated and is going away....what did they do? Put on a facemask? Quit smoking? Run to the hills?

The U.S. is not China by a long shot. Although more and more Americans like to live in a cramped city cooped up like pigeons in a coop we still have a far better environment along with healthcare. Bottom line? Take care of yourself; take reasonable precautions; stay away from sick folks and large crowds (I don't like lot of folks anyway ); take your vitamin C and E to help your immune system and then go about your business.

AND, PLEASE, PLEASE if you are one of those reactionary stock owners, or have an advisor that is, STOP the so poorly advised running and selling of your equities out of fear; you only hurt yourself. In 6 mos. this hysteria will be gone and life will go on as it was a month or so ago. Oh wait! It's time to take puppy out and she really needs to go but I've got to find my hazmat suit!!

I’m not very worried about it. I’m more annoyed with everyone buying up all the N95 masks. And some trying to profit off them. I need those masks for work. I manufacture livestock feed and oat dust will really do a number on your lungs. Luckily I have a roughly 2-3 month supply left.

One good thing is the Feds lowered the interest rate this week. I was able to refinance our already great mortgage another 0.75% lower. I’m checking on our van tomorrow. I should be able to shave off a year and another half percent and keep the same payment amount.

I'd be annoyed if I were in Thailand and "resellers" were supplying me with faulty goods. Who'd of thunk that a clothes iron and some Downy could be a profitable business model in a coronavirus pandemic.

To the OP's question "has it changed/altered your camping plans for the upcoming season?" NO As of this date it is more hype the worry. Healthy people that eat right and exercise will not have much worry about. WASH YOUR HANDS! it help with all kinds of viruses.

Just an observation about that statement: "We don't know what we don't know." If they were not reported or diagnosed how does the NHS know about them? Sounds like bureaucratic bs to me.

I saw on the news this AM that there are runs at major box stores on TP and hand sanitizer. One 'ol boy got into a fight over the last TP and had to be Tazed by the police to let go. I think Ebola was contained because of great TP distribution.
Besides the JD spray I am now carrying a roll of Charmin Extra soft. I am so totally protected.

It may be anecdotal but this was my grandma's go to cure in my childhood.

Also one of the first things I learned to compound in pharmacy school. Must be good stuff if they taught us how to make it, right?

Just the memory of the smell of that stuff evokes memories of picking blackberries and then finding out the chiggers were making me their meal afterwards. I sure did get a lot of that stuff put on me in the summer when visiting grandparents in Alabama.

Chionophobia. Here in Central Maryland we see panic every winter. When they forecast snow folks will clear the shelves of bread, milk, and toilet paper. I thought maybe they mixed the 3 and made a paste to cover the walks with it but no, it's simply the fear of being housebound without the essentials. Doesn't matter that the worst storms in local history hasn't kept people isolated for more than 2 or 3 days at the most.

Now, thanks mainly to the over hyping press in their zeal to make a buck have contributed to the hysteria. More deaths will occur from opioid abuse, more from motor vehicle crashes, more from the "normal flu", but that is old news and the public has accepted it as the "norm" or "status quo".

Do what you should be doing normally inn the cold and flu season and continue on with life. The zombie apocalypse is just a television show.

Sourdough,
You hit the nail on the head.

I will be making reservations at our favorite beach-side resort today, and have reservations already at other resorts across the South--including a week at Disney World. I plan no actions, other than those that make sense regardless of Corona--Wash hands, keep your hands away from your face, avoid touching public things, and etc. I think the dude on "Monk" had something to offer.

I always get the Flu shot and always will.

Enjoy life. Stop paying attention to the media whose mission is to make money, not tell truthful news.
