My 'toy' is a '31 Ford, Brookville steel body except for Wescott 'glass front fenders on a TCI stage lll IFS chassis, powered by a well warmed over Ford 5.0, a C4 transmission and a '57 Ford round back 9" rear end It resides in Southern Saratoga County, NY. And for the engine guys, this is the 5.0 with close to its current 'dress' :

Sorry if I've helped take this thread on a hijack trip. I really like my diesel though the V10 gasser would have done just as well hauling but with the added expense of lots more gas (7.4 mpg vs 12-14 with the diesel). Even better, the current LB truck has a 38+ gallon tank while the V10 powered truck, a SB had a 28 gallon tank which meant that at 7 mpg, it seemed like 10 minutes after filling it up, you were starting to look for the next gas station you could fit in with either a 33 or 38 foot fiver, 13 plus feet high hung on the back.

'09 Chevy 2500 HD 6.0 mileage

Haven't heard anyone with the gasser talk about their mileage.

I'm pulling a 2014 Keystone Sprinter with mine. My truck has 3:73 gears with the 6 speed. I get 9 mpg max, 7 is very common. Just depends on the wind and the terrain. It very rarely if ever pulls in 6th gear. It pulls the Sprinter ok, but I'm sure a diesel would be effortless.

All in all I'm gairly happy with my gasser, but if I stepped up to a bigger 5er would definately need a diesel.

I guess we'll find out next weekend. First trip with new truck and the Outback. I moved the camper today. Funny how I didn't even need the W/D bars to move it in and out of the driveway. Might have to take out one more washer on the EQ hitch. The back end only went down 3 inches total. Still had a noticeable rake. I did use the truck to pull my 20 ft boat thru town and back. Can barely tell it's even hooked up.

Really going to enjoy getting 9-10mpg with a 36 gal tank. This truck is gonna swallow gas in $100 bills.

Congrats on the new truck, hope it's everything you are expecting. I thought the new gassers were the 6.2 not 6.0. I had a 6.0, pulled a 30' 5er, about 8k lbs. Never passed a gas station, got 8 mpg at best. My dmax typically gets about 11.5 when towing the lighter trailers and about 10 pulling my current 5er at 15k.

The one argument for the dmax that was eluded to, but not really laid out...the Allison. That thing is a beast of a transmission that will run forever. I'm not sure what people are talking about with the maintenance costs. The GM gassers use 6 qts of oil, the dmax 10. Filters are the same price, so the only difference in maint costs is 4qts of oil. Yes every 20k you have to change a fuel filter at a whopping $30. The Allison spin on filter is $10 every 20k miles as well. So if you pay $15 for an extra 4 qts of oil every 10k miles, that's a grand total of $70 more for maintenance every 20k miles. For most people, that 1-2 years worth of driving. I save that in fuel on one trip over my old gasser. Not to mention the diesel has a higher mileage life expectancy and resale value is incredible. People don't bat an eye when buying a diesel with 100k miles, as the old saying goes, it's just getting broke in. Gasser with 100k miles, little different story.

The Allison is definitely and upside. My 4L80E has been flawless, but tranny braking and the extra gears would be awesome.

I never mention gas mileage because I don't worry about it. If I did I wouldn't be RVing.

You only have 40k miles on your 2002 truck, you never mention gas mileage because you never buy gas I had 102k on my 02 when I traded it in back in 11. I had 45k on my 11 when I traded it in back in 14' and now have 90k on my other 11, most of which are towing miles. I don't worry about gas mileage on my vette though.

I found a nice used 2013 Duramax Quad cab locally with only 17k miles on it. The dealer has the truck listed for $42k. I might be able to talk them down to $40K. Obviously, that truck is more than enough to pull and STOP that camper.

Had the trailer weighed and we're at 8450 lbs without water or food and clothing. So we will be using every bit of the trailer's 9000lb GVWR.

I have my heart stuck on a 2015 Stone Blue Metallic GMC 2500 quad cab. That truck is the 6.0 gasser with the 6 spd. Best price I can get is around 46k.

Here's the rub, my drive to work is only 10 miles round trip each day. I am concerned that the short trip 90% driving will be an issue with a diesel. We can use the truck as much as possible for longer drives during non-camping season.

The new 2015 is a totally different truck than the 2013 d-max. It's SO NICE inside compared to the Chevy. And I really don't want the maintenance of the diesel if I can avoid it. So many pluses though as far as towing and not worrying about 'enough truck'

Payload works out as a wash due to the weight of the drivetrain. 9500 GVWR for the gas truck and 10000 for the oil burner.

Love the looks and features of the 2015, love the towing capacity of the 2013 D-max. My buddy is on his 2nd one in the NNBS trucks. His new 2015 Silverado is amazing.

Thanks for helping. -- Joe
. It the lml a Ltz 4x4 z71 if so buy it . I looked a long time for low mileage 40 k was the price . I use it to pull my 311 21700 gvw. You won't be sorry and will never be under powered like a gasser or looking for a gear to do the job. 12 mpg pulling and keep it 75 and can get 19 mpg.

LOL, yeah I only use it to tow the trailer, not really a truck guy. Most of those miles are towing. Otherwise I drive my WS6 or my Grand Prix.

Just got back from a LONG trip to Santa Claus Indiana and back. 7 hrs each way. The new 2015 Sierra HD is a GREAT truck. Almost 2500 miles on it and half of that is towing the camper. The 4.10 gear is a Godsend. Never saw 6th gear, didn't need it. Getting 8-10 MPG with 9 being the average. Very happy so far and I can't believe I ever went this long without cruise control. The 36 gallon tank is amazing. Although we did top off the tank when we stopped if the price was right.

Congrats on your new truck! Now just have her strapped to a dyno with a tank full of 93 octane and start the tuning. Then just stand back with a poop-eating grin on your face while you watch what that 6.0 can really do. I still have my dyno sheet if you would like to see it.

Congrats on the new truck.

I'm confused on some of the Maintenance times used on the duramax. I have a 2013 gmc 2500 duramax and I change the oil (about every 7500miles) when the dash says to, same with fuel filter.( first time was at 40k). The Allison transmission filter is not recommended to be changed until 45k miles under severe or regular use. Air cleaner at 45k.
