I tow a 20ft enclosed car hauler for my show truck. three years ago I went to a show in a town 40 miles away, and parked the trailer in the Walmart lot, while I took the truck to the show. gone most of the day.
loaded back up,, towed home, turned the next to the last corner (mile and a quarter to go) and heard a weird sound.. stopped and the hitch bar was 'just' in the receiver, held there by the two safety chains.. no pin to be seen. it WAS there when I left in the morning, and its clip was securely on.
I have a weight distributing hitch, and its upward pressure may have helped keep the bar in the hitch.
I called my wife, bring a jack, but I couldn't get the wd bars undone.
so, I will limp home.. 1-2mph.
turned the last corner (1/2 mile to go) and BOOM.. the hitch came undone.
one safety chain ripped the trailer side retainer off, snapped the weld.
but the WD bars could be released, and the hitch bar put back in, and a new pin inserted. made it home..
have a locking pin since then. I was standing right there when I raised the trailer jack 40 miles ago.. never THOUGHT to look at the pin.. who would do such a thing?
I was towing 7000lbs at 60 mph.. wow that could have been a disaster.
