New owner 2008 Cougar 289BHS - Surge Guard & Generator Question

Just purchased this fifth wheel and am pulling it with a 2002 GMC 2500HD diesel full cab, short box truck.
Right after purchase I installed a 30A Surge Guard protector (hard wired). Today I tried to hook up a portable generator to the power-in cable but get no AC voltage in the coach. I am assuming the protector is "protecting" against something. Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Bushman,
Yes, I have about a 2 1/2 minute delay on mine and then it kicks in.
I received some info from others directing me to try putting a load on the other outlet before hooking to the trailer and it worked. I also tried hooking up a Honda 2000c and it worked right off without any additional load.
I think I will be purchasing a Honda 3000is to go with my trailer. I have heard them running and the low db level is awesome. I did not try one of them with my trailer but I figured that if the 2000c worked, then it is likely the 300i0s will work. Thank you for your suggestion though.
