bottoming out?

I noticed on my Passport 2890RL the waste tank drain line hangs very low in the undercarriage. If I should bottom out on the road, it appears this appendage will receive a significant amount of damage. Anyone out there deal with this? I'm still a newbie and maybe worrying, needlessly. Thanks.

On our Springdale fifth wheel, the drain fittings were about the same place they are on your trailer, between the front axle and the front of the trailer. I also was concerned that it might be damaged, then I started looking closer and thinking about how exposed it really is.

Take a straight edge, or stretch a string tightly, from the bottom of the tire forward to the lowest point under the front of the trailer. On yours, that will probably be the lower point of the A frame. If the drain fittings are above that string, then there's little chance it would contact the ground. I've seen some Passports that appear to have the drain much lower than others and some of them have been "towed a far piece" and they don't seem to have any repairs in that area, so it's probably not as "vulnerable" as you might think. Do the straight edge "look-see" and if it's above that line, you're pretty much OK.

From the trailers I've seen, I would be much more concerned with knocking off one of the scissors jacks than damaging the plumbing.

I've also seen some real low drains at lots of different positions along the frame. Have yet to see a single unit come in for damage to any of the plumbing.

I been over some pretty rough roads and a bunch of steep rail crossings and never had a problem with scraping the low point drains on the 2890RL we traded..

Our North Trail was only a 2 step height and the rear drain between the tires and rear bumper was only 5.5 inches off the ground. It scraped a few times but never broke. I did rip off the rear motor for the power jacks as that was only 7 inches off the ground. After 2 years we traded it in as it was too much work to get it in and out of the driveway. When getting the Premier, I measured every low point I could find and we are 12.5 inches off the ground now, big difference.

Just keep an eye on it and in time you will learn where it might be an issue.

Thanks, everyone. Glad to hear the low drain pipe isn't as big a concern as I thought it might be. Will do the string check just to be sure.
