Firewood

Any of you bring your own firewood? We've had mixed luck with buying firewood from the campgrounds. Sometimes it's been fine but it's mostly been green wood that smokes more than burns. Our old trailer had a big plastic storage bin attached to the bumper and that held enough wood for our 2 night weekend getaways.

Now we have the 19FBPR and I was thinking of getting some kind of long plastic storage bin like the kind that goes under a bed to put into the front storage space so we can bring our own wood.

Anyone ever do anything like this? Any ideas to share?

I wouldn't put any wood inside, even the storage unit. That would be an easy way to introduce some unwanted insects to your TT. Also you should check and be sure you are not in a quarantined area for Emerald Ash Borer.

We do have the Ash Borer quarantine going on here. I always burn everything I purchase or take in. In fact, I've always kept our wood in that container on the old TT sealed until I needed more for the fire. We have yet to camp with our new trailer. I've also contemplated getting another big Rubbermaid container and just keeping it in the back of the truck instead of in the TT.

The wood at campgrounds has been really iffy. Once the wood was so green we gave up on a campfire for that trip and sat outside at night without a fire. It was kind of a bummer. I left the green wood there at the campground for someone else.

We take our own firewood all the time. Put it in the truck along with a old clothes dryer tub to burn in.

We use to bring our own wood all the time but most states here don't allow it to cross state lines and many campgrounds do no allow outside wood. No one really checks but the fines are high if caught. We buy from the campground or someone just outside the gate. The other option is to buy pre dried wood from a store.

I've never taken it out of state, I abide by the 50 mile rule as well.
I never thought about doing it until I saw guys come in with their pickup beds full of wood. I've also learned it's been a better experience to buy from a gas station in the area than from the campground, usually cheaper too.

You could always tell who brought their own wood in at night, they had nice campfires.

I've always brought my own, bought locally... Can't count on campgrounds to have wood, many do but more don't.

I bring those fire logs, my favorite is the eco log that is made of cardboard and wax, light one and then put your wood on top . . . they normally help to keep what I buy local burning

Your best friend in an AXE. It can turn a smokey non-burning fire into a blaze of glory.

Just cut each log into 4 and it will burn just fine even if it hasn't dried out. Just get a good base with kindling going first. If I was traveling I would only bring some kindling with me........... and a good axe

My secret ingredient is match light charcoal. Toss a 2.5 or 5 lb bag in the fire ring load most anything on top and it will burn. Much of the time smokeless too.

Firewood don't

Don't transport firewood!

Here is Illinois, they are showing the Emerald Ash Borer appearing right along the Interstate highway routes.

Last time I checked, bugs don't use GPS's and follow the highways

Something I learned being a cub scout leader. Got to get the fire going fast or the kids will find a way.

These days I never take my own fire wood. Living in va I've seen the damage imported insects can do, really sad in some places.

we take our own wood if we are close to home - the 50 mile rule I guess. We bought a propane firepit after a trip out west when there were fire restrictions, but you could use propane firepits. Doesn't have the wood smoke smell, but it is pretty, warm and isn't too large so doesn't take up alot of room in the bed of the truck. Works great when wood is an issue.

This year in Arkansas they are saying you can't bring in firewood. You will need to buy at the park office.

Texas State Park we visit frequently usually has it available for a donation, problem is I hardly ever see anyone donate. We just got back from a few days of camping and this time they had the wood stored on a trailer and they'd move it at closing. My guess is some of the locals were stealing it all this winter as the entrance is less than a 1/4 mile off a highway and there are no attendants after around 5PM and also no gates. Pretty sad but not surprised.

In the western states, what is showing up and killing the drought stressed pine trees is a bark beetle, which is also another reason to not transport firewood. It's pretty sad seeing all the dead pine trees in the mountains of the Sierras.

All the campers that are transporting firewood are just adding to the bug problems. There is a reason they tell you not to bring your own firewood and it's not because they want to make you buy it from the campground. I live in northern MN and we camp between here and the cities a lot and see many campers from the cities coming north with there own wood. Some people don't think the rules apply to them.

I agree, transporting firewood is really irresponsible, you wont see the damage but eventually you will be ruining an eco system that we all depend upon and not just for recreation.
