They are patriotic, put the flag up and think it's okay to leave it up 24 hrs a day. I find that many are appreciative if you talk to them and educate them of the proper way to fly our flag.
Now if you were not flying it after dark.....then to hell with them and fly those colors high and with pride.

From the US Flag Code....... Display of the Flag 24 Hours a Day
There is no absolute prohibition in federal law on flying the flag twenty-four
hours a day. The Flag Code states:
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on
buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic
effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated
during hours of darkness. ......Only reason for my post is to show the pole does not need to be permanent. My reason for flying at night is patriotic effect. I think the flag looks great with a nice bright light against a dark background.

Okay, maybe it's only on military installations where it can only be flown 24 hrs a day on the permanent installation pole, all others must be brought down. Thank you for pointing that out. As pointed out in both of our posts, a flag flown after sunset must be properly illuminated, which most people do not do. Thank you for providing clarification.

The flag is actually made of red white and blue lights. That'll probably not be covered under any rules

I would venture to say that is lighted. Maybe it's too bright and is keeping g the neighbors awake at night. Oh well who cares right?

Btw, I'm assuming you are at Kirtland, a Navy guy lucky enough to get stationed at an AFB. Wish I had known before, I was just down there last month to officiate a retirement ceremony. I'm retiring in Dec and moving back to Las Cruces, maybe our paths will cross someday

I wouldn't call it lucky but it has been nice seeing the Southwest. Too hot here for me. I belong up north. 260 days until I transfer and that may be getting shortened.
I use an LED worklight mounted to the top of my ladder. Switch is in the front compartment.

Yeah Kirtland isn't one of the better AF locations or even one of the nicer bases, but I'd take it over Norfolk. Where are you headed to next? I have to say after 25 years I'm looking forward to staying in one place for a while. Tired of packing and unpacking every few years and then trying to figure out where to put all of my toys every time we move to a new place

Our Nations Flag
I have greatest respect for our nations flag and proud of my Navy flag as well. I gave 30 years of service to our great country and I will fly my flags with pride. I ran into an older gentleman with a submarine flag and had to have one for myself. I spent 22 years on the boats and loved every minute. You don’t see many submarine dolphin flags in campgrounds. So if you see one ask for Sparky, that’s me.

I considered lighting mine at night, but I didn't want to contribute to "light polution" that might inconvenience someone parked next to me, so I take it down at sunset. I do the same at home, even though the neighborhood is sparse with 20 acre parcels and BLM land. I really enjoy the night sky at 5400' devoid of porch lights, flood lights, etc.
Edit: You will never see awning lights on my 5er, either.
FWIW...
