Toilet

Our toilet bowl is not holding water. Is this a seal or something that can be replaced? It is a 2008 Laredo fifth wheel. It's a china toilet...not plastic.

Welcome to the forum!!

Depending on brand/model, there are kits available to replace the bowl seal. Make and model are most commonly on the rear of the toilet, near the bottom.

If porcelin, likely is a Dometic 3xx series toilet. See this video:

It may also be a Thetford toilet which is what keystone uses a lot of and it will have a china bowl also. A photo of the pedal assembly will confirm which toilet you have.

The Thetford Aqua Magic we had didn't have a china bowl. It was all plastic, shaped very round like a bucket and was not appropriate for the male anatomy. It was also too low and you had to bend over to flush with the little gray handle on the rear and side of the toilet to flush. I don't need to explain why I feel satan himself invented the thing and throwing it away and replacing with a Dometic 312 was an immediate ownership requirement. Porcelin, higher, foot flush, and best, ELONGATED to accomodate a real human fella!

IF it is a Thetford, here is a seal replacment video. Note that the fella in the video name Marshall seems rather happy to be wrestling with this Aqua Magic. REPLACE REPLACE with a Dometic and put a water shut off in the supply line!

Just a disclaimer, that Marshall isn't me. I have a full head of hair!
Ok, in the spirit of transparency my hair is white.
And in years gone by I owned one of those Thetford units and ripped it out before it was ever used.

Not to show my age, but years ago (50+) Thetford was the "gold standard" for RV toilets. They were also, "the only game in town".... Then along came a better idea (SeaLand's marine toilet adapted for RV use) and it became the "better choice"....

Being "PIG-HEADED" the RV community maintained its "loyalty" to Thetford, even though SeaLand was a better, easier to work on system..... When Dometic bought the SeaLand line and changed the name to Dometic (the "go to refrigerator line), only then did the toilet design start gaining popularity...

Now, Dometic/SeaLand is the "go to toilet" and is much more popular (for good reason) than Thetford. If you've ever changed (and done the associated CUSSING) that comes with changing a Thetford flush valve, you'll know why Dometic is the "toilet of choice" from a maintainer's perspective.....

Totally agree! If it's a Thetford don't change the valve, change the toilet to a Dometic, cheaper parts, easier repairs & better flush.

Having worked on both, Dometic is my preference.

Maintenance is one issue but the MAIN issue is the shape of the Thetford Aqua Magic. Not only too low, the flush is on the back where you have to peer down into the bowl when flushing but the shape is not anatomically correct for a male or in fact any human. One camping trip and I was on the phone to PPLMotorhomes for a Dometic 312... ELONGATED!

I think they are great if you have a toddler that you're potty training.

When I sell a trailer, I always put in the ad: NO SMOKER, NO PETS AND NO KIDS. (we lie about the pets)

Not just the flush valve on Thetfords leak but there is a little plastic bottle on the upper backside. It regulates the air ~~ not only on the flush but it can put a hard to find stink in the bathroom with every flush. Eventually it will leak too. CW just had a sale on Dometics. Next week a 320 goes in the main and a 310 goes in the 1/2 bath. I got both under $400 + tax delivered.

You definitely want to repair it, since it is a porcelain bowl. Replacement cost of a porcelain bowl toilet is around $300.
