50 amp surge protector

So this is my first 50amp camper I have a 50amp surge protector. Going to camp with only 30amps for 2 weeks. Can I use my 50 amp protector with the dog bone or will it not allow power because of the 30 amps? T.I.A.

It should. Not all dogbones are created equally. Do yourself a favor and upgrade from a surge protector to a true EMS.

Yep, no problelm. Just use a 30 amp to 50 amp adapter to plug into the campground pedestal, then plug your EMS into the adapter and plug your shore power cord into the EMS.

I agree, I’m not aware of ever having a surge, although I’m sure others have. What I do encounter is low voltage, miss wired and missing grounds. A true EMS will handle that.

It is possible the OP does have an EMS and he’s just referring to it as a surge protector.

Anything is possible, but I think the average new owner doesn’t know the difference. By the query on using it on a 30 amp dogbone would make me think the op isn't experienced with the devices.

A good EMS is a life saver for the RV... We've used a few different ones over the years and currently using the plug in one from Progressive...

I plug it in before I unhook or roll out the shore power cable to verify the park power pedestal...

Most of the places we go to over in Montana are well maintained and kept current with regards to the services...

Some are not...

To me the EMS unit is the #1 item every new RV owner should purchase followed with a quality two or three stage water filter and quality pressure regulator..

It always amazes me to see the number of famous Blue water filters hanging off the city water connection with the cheap brass in line pressure regulator..

And of course then you gotta have all these LEDs hanging every where and underneath to light up the world

Well agree with the EMS, wAter filter maybe.
The LEDs under the unit are rodent deterrent, they have worked well for us over the last 5 years.

Those strings of LED lights are great for keeping the UFO sighters busy. It's all part of "the great outdoors" experience. Just like the outdoor tv, radio speakers, folks with their faces buried in their phones, kids playing video games, you know, getting back in touch with nature!

That's a surge protector. It may indicate a wiring issue but it doesn’t do anything about it. A true EMS will interrupt the power for those faults as well as for low voltage or high voltage conditions.

Well I also like nature, but not critters crawling around inside my rig! I don’t like the stinky solutions which have limited results. The LED string lights under the 5er have worked well for the last five years, so well that I installed a shortened string around the inside of my engine compartment. Never an issue even in a park overrun with ground squirrels. The only time we got a mouse was during a nine day power outage.

Hey, whatever blows your skirt up, it's all good. I had no idea that those kids rolling around with under car and wheel lights in the fenders were keeping critters out.

We have a progressive 30 amp EMS. Last year at Jekyll Island, it someone retained water. We didn't realize it until we were home. It also fried the prongs on my power cord. I contacted Progressive and they not only gave me a new EMS, they also provided a $100 new cord. It's a little pricey at first, but that up front cost is much better than having to replace everything electric in your camper.

This the one we have (see below). I actually bought it from someone on this forum. Even though i wasn't the original owner, Progressive still provided a replacement.
