Urgent trip came up

Looks like I'll be coming out of hiding here pretty quick... I'll be traveling to Albuquerque to visit family, one relative in particular who is elderly and just moved to hospice care (not ill with covid). DW doesn't have PTO yet with her new job so she's staying home with the kids. Got a parking spot lined up there with family, I'll even have water hookup so I won't need to tanker it in.

I have a few concerns I wanted to share with the masses and seek input.

1. Minnesota trailer tabs can only be renewed in person... at the DVS offices which are all currently closed. My TT tabs expired in Feb, I believe MN said they aren't enforcing expired registration on trailers but it seems like an invite to be pulled over in other states?

2. Number 1 kind of ties in with this, now when we're seeing people cited or arrested for letting their kids play with the neighbors... MN is relatively lax and the stay-at-home order explicitly allows for "interstate travel" but I'll be studying the other states on my route to gauge my risk of being pulled over "just for being out on the road with my toys".

3. Looking at maybe western Nebraska for the overnight stop down and back. I studied the RVlife page that is linked at the top of this subforum and am going to call a few around North Platte after I submit this.

Couple of housekeeping items on the truck to do before the trip too... new brakes are arriving tomorrow so I can do the rears and rotors. Also gonna have the windshield replaced, it's got a nice crack across it now.

Hope all is well with all of you, and that you continue to be safe and healthy.

We've had numerous folks in the past several weeks leave from our park traveling in about every direction across the country, also across the northern border, with not one reporting any problems with fuel, lodging, campgrounds, groceries or take out food orders. All have reported that it's very eery traveling with the only traffic being trucks & not as many of those as usual even in/around the large cities.

Take a look at the Minnesota DMV news page: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/dvs/new...s/default.aspx

Apparently they've made some "work around" arrangements for renewing registrations at "deputy offices"..

You might want to send an email (or call) the DVM and explain your situation, ask their advice or if they say, "no problem everything is extended and they won't expire", then ask them to send you an email. Print it out and carry it with your registration. If stopped in another state, just show them your email...

Along the same lines as what has been suggested; we have heard from no friends who have had the first bit of problem travelling home. Make every effort to contact one of the bureaucrats at the Minnesota DVS (who I'm sure had nothing to do with the completely asinine idea of tags in person) and keep a copy of all efforts. Hit the road and enjoy the journey as best as possible during this time. If you should be pulled over (highly unlikely) just tell the LEO your tale and down the road you go. If they insist on ticketing you then grin, bear with it, and shake your head in amazement and head down the road. There is no hope for them.

When in Abq be aware that it might not be as safe or trusting as where you are from. The previous mayor made a disaster of the police force and crime has blossomed there. Fortunately, I live south of town in a quiet suburb with very little crime.
Oh, and we are having a heat wave for the next week or so.

Thanks John this is real helpful, actually now looks like maybe I could renew at certain offices as early as Monday!

This was an aspect I hadn't even considered and I appreciate you pointing it out. At this moment I'm not sure what "part of town" they're in, so not sure if they consider it "good or bad". When I visited in 2008 my car got egged.

If my TT only gets egged I'll be happy... but I just checked and NM doesn't have reciprocity with Minnesota for my pistol permit.

If they live in a gated community, you should be fine, otherwise I'm not sure there is a good part of town. It has settled down now with the virus a bit so you might be okay.
I feel bad saying all this as I was born there, but the balloon fiesta is awesome except for all the traffic and extra pollution.

As Keystoned pointed out Albuquerque, although pretty, has had (has) some serious issues with not only crime but the PD. Although the issues surrounding the PD investigation by the DOJ doesn't particularly revolve around the issues you face they are however part of a systemic crime/enforcement problem that has just kept growing over the years.

IMO there is no "safe" area to speak of there. Gated communities would be much safer if that is where you are heading. My son used to live in Abq several years ago and my daughter worked for UNM there remotely but she had to go in every week for a day or two. It got bad enough that I just kept insisting she do all her work remotely (of course she didn't live with me). Finally she got it revised to working remotely and going in 1 day a month.

Not trying to scare you or worry you; just take care and always be aware of your surroundings and what's going on. It's a shame about the reciprocity. Safe travels.

The mayor in that article is the newer, better guy. And I did forget about all that. Also seems like APD officers were a bit loose with their guns for a while or maybe just a few cowboys, who knows. No offense to any LEOs here.

Addressing the inability to renew tags, can only speak to Maryland but the DMV here is closed and the governor issued an order that all registrations are extended until 30 days after they reopen. Therefore, any LEO running the tag thru their computer (or dispatcher's) the tag will not come back as expired.

I can't image having an out of date tag sticker creating concern with an LEO unless something is suspicious and they are "looking for a reason" for a traffic stop. Of course there's always that one officer with the "Wyatt Earp syndrome"......

Just go...no problems. Stay at Walmarts.

Just break your brakes in....

As for windowshield. They are cheap down south, wait. You should be able to have one installed for around $200

Thanks again everyone.. definitely not in a gated community where I'd be parking. Perhaps I'd be better off in a private campground instead? Looks like there's a few that may still be open.

What part of town is your family in and how long will be visiting?

In the northeastern quadrant, roughly the Sandia HS area. Actually only about 15-20 mins from Albuquerque KOA there.

I anticipate being there 3 or 4 nights.

I'm not an RV park fan but they probably offer some security compared to city streets and neighborhoods.

CRK, there is an RV park in the casino, SW of town, right off the interstate 25 South, we have stayed there a number of times and it is very safe. You might call to see if they are open.

I've not spent a lot of time at RV parks myself, but yeah I think I'll feel safer being there than on the city streets and neighborhoods. I didn't realize at first that any CGs would be open, I'm glad I checked!

Plus in that case I won't look so out of place when I'm cooking my bacon and eggs outside.

Thanks again, I really appreciate all the "local" insights.

Hey Jim, thanks for that! Is that Isleta Resort & Casino? I'll surely call them!

Yes, that is the one. It is completely wide open, all large, long pull thru sites. Sadly, they are probably closed but it doesn't hurt to call.

Route 66 casino west of Abq a few miles on I40 has a huge RV park with very long pull thru sites also. Can't hurt to call!
