Load capacity

I just realized that my tires might not be rated for my trailer's GVWR.

Current tires are Towmax 205/75R14 rated for 1750 lbs, which I think is standard for that tire size. Total capacity is 7000.

The little yellow sticker on my screen door says that UVW is 4940 and max cargo is 2220, for a total of 7160. I don't have a picture of my manufacturer sticker at the front corner of the trailer.

Should/can I upgrade to 15" wheels and tires?

With a GTWR of 7160.... Loaded to the max, roughly 716 to 1074 pounds (10 to 15% tongue weight) is supported by the tow vehicle. Only 6444 to 6086 rests on the tires.

Feel free to upgrade, but based upon the "rating", your current tires are plenty.

Btw, have you been to the scales? A practice I recommend for everyone.

Are you calling me "fat"? I didn't eat *that* much at Thanksgiving, but we will be hamming it up tomorrow.

But my truck and trailer have been to the scales and we're good. Trailer's historical max is about 6000lbs with 700 or so of that on the tongue. Thanks for pointing out the obvious that I missed, being that not all weight is on the axles. Now I need to find some other reason to upgrade the wheels and tires.

You are likely ok with those tires, upgrade when you can aford new. Also remember that as any vehicle is moving, weight is being transfered from tire to tire. Due to cornnering, stopping, bounceing etc. RVs have axles closer together than the tow vehicle so wt. will not shift as much but, it does happen. So, I go with a tire with higher load wt. if I am close to GVW at the scale.
