Might I ask how this shows that the state doesn't care about tourism? I expect the usual California/west coast haters aren't going to visit anyway regardless of fuel prices.
Not sure where that was going myself, but I put all the "free government money" in the same file as the student loan forgiveness and stimulus checks bin. If you really want to get my vote just give me a mortgage forgiveness for my mansion in Georgia!

Probably true that it won't effect the folks that dislike CA. But, IMHO the states that suspend the state taxes is more equitable and inviting to visitors and commerce. Here in Maryland the removal of the gas tax I think sends a message that the relief is for the consumer, not the resident. This is a small state with a large tourism trade. From the Atlantic beaches, the Cheapeake Bay, to the mountians in the western end of the state a lot of the tourism comes from the surrounding states. In my honest opinion this shows that the state ( this was voted on by the state legislature and not by the governor alone) makes a statement that they are trying to address the issue vs thoughts of re-election .
JMHO, YMMV

Well with some states talking about forgiveness I looked up fuel tax by state. California is number 2 in gas tax at $0.533 per gallon of GAS, but $0.68 per gallon of DIESEL. That is 27.5% more than GAS!!

Not defending any state or their gas taxes but, the reasoning behind higher Diesel taxes is that supposedly fuel taxes are to be used for highway construction and maintenance. Since Semi's weigh more and so cause more wear on pavement. Here in FL Diesel tax is $0.08 a gallon more then gas.

Just to poke a stick through the fence at this barking dog, might there be a small amount of naivety in those thinking that the gas stations are actually going to lower their prices the same amount as the state taxes?

I only see a $0.04 difference, I know some states charge semis license fees based on weight and miles driven.

The "lone" stations far from compatition? Very doubtful, why would they? The populated areas where there's say 10 stations in a 5 mile radius, you bet they will as the competition will in effect force them to. If the tax is say 30 cents and station A drops their prive by 10 cents and when they draw business away the others drop it further and it goes back and forth. At least that's been my observation.

In practical terms, how can you know when the prices are crude are fluctuating so radicaly so rapidily? I still think the most equitable refund is tax relief. I'd much prefer that the actual user get relief based on real usage vs handing out the same one time checks for folks who drive 2,000 miles/yr as folks that drive 50,000 miles/ yr or for vehichles that have been setting on blocks in a yard for 20 years. In my mind it's just the logical way to be equitable. YMMV

AFAIK out here the “rebate” will be $400 per registered vehicle with a cap of 2 per address, I have 3. I’m just wondering if it wil be taxed as income.

Well, as we all know, there's no such thing as "free"!

I think CA hates everything & everyone, unless you live in a tent & crap on the street.
