Enough Truck??
Hi
New to the site & have a question. I have a 08 Doge1500 Quad cab 4 wheel drive with a Hemi. What size camper can I tow without killing the truck?? where do you draw the line & go to a 2500 or bigger?? We are looking at a 27ft Springdale pull & a 25ft Hornet 5th wheel, both with 1 slide out
Thanks JR

I would check out this site for your question and then make up your own mine what you can safely pull.
http://www.dodge.com/bodybuilder/2008/intro.pdf
Click on the Ram logo, then click the Quad logo. You will then pick on the RH side, Base weights and payload, you can then choose the 1500 truck. This will provide you with all of the information you will need.

With the 5.7L and 3.92 rear SB or LB you will be at Mfg. max pin weight on the 5er. The TT should be a better match. In my opinion it will handle either under moderate conditions. But you will be much closer to the limits on the 5er. JM2¢ Hank

Thanks for the info, I was wondering if anyone had my same setup & how they were making out, numbers are great but real experience can't be disputed.

The site and instructions that I posted are for the 2008 MY only. Each year could be different depending on what options and standard features that are being offered by Dodge. I also pointed out that the poster should use the 1500 style truck.
If he did that and is using the 5.7L gas engine and 5 spd auto with a Quad cab LB 4X4 STL, his max GCVW will be 14,000 LBS and the trailer will be 8,300 LBS.
You need to review your model year and use the appropriate charts for what ever year your truck is.

Hope this helps you out. I wasn't sure what size bed you had.
Note: ST ratings shown. SLT and Laramie models have lower ratings, depending on
equipment. See dealer for details.
1500 QC Shortbed 4WD 5.7L V-8 7,500 (a,f,t)
1500 QC Shortbed 4WD 5.7L V-8 8,500 (a,h,t)
1500 QC Longbed 4WD 5.7L V-8 8,300 (a,h,t)
a = Automatic Transmission
f = 3.55:1 axle ratio
h = 3.92:1 axle ratio
t = Towing package required.

The highest payload with the 5.7 is 1380lbs. The largest trailer is 8500. The more options you have on the truck the lower your payload. Figure hitch at 100 min. ... passengers at 150 avg. ... and any other gear or kids or pets. It will tow it fine but you are over Mfg. limits for what they are worth.

Like Hank said you are going to be limited to 8500 LBS for your trailer. As for the Big Horn addition that is just a package like the HD package on the GM brands. Your best bet would be to stay with a camper that has a ship weight of nothing more then 6000 LBS and a payload of no more then 2000 LBS. Of course these totals can be adjusted but the big thing is not to load the camper to more then what your truck will handle. My truck has a tow rating of 8600 LBS and our trailer ship weight is 6583 with a cargo carring capacity of 2872 LBS. I don't have a problem pulling it with our 1/2 ton until we get into big climbs or higher winds. I also make sure we don't exceed the limits of the truck. We normally don't go much over 8000 LBS loaded. If you watch your weight your truck should be good for the 27ft travel trailer. As for the 5th wheel you would probably have problems with that. I hope this helps you out and good luck.
