I look at the planned mileage for the day and divide by 50 MPH. Takes into account rest stops or fuel stops when driving at 60 MPH (my personal towing speed limit). Unlike flying, my ETA doesn't have to be within 3 minutes, but some of those gadgets can be fun.
I like Waze for real time traffic info that can dramatically change my ETA or give me a headsup for detours that might better keep me on schedule by avoiding stop and go traffic...or I just stay out of Kalifornia and similar places.
If Waze can get me out of the maze that is the Hollywood Hills (for free) in my rental shoebox, it will navigate me anywhere. It wasn't my choice to be there, BTW, it was funeral.
