Can't get there from here

Working on plans for an extended trip back east this fall. Leaving out of California's central valley, heading out through Las Vegas, Utah, pick up I-70 and then out through CO. and KS, etc.
Thought we would take the opportunity to visit Zion NP in Utah by taking SR 9 from I-15 to ZION NP. Well, according to GS trip planner, there is an 11' height restriction near about half way through the park. So, looks like we'll camp outside of Bryce Canyon and make a day trip down U.S. 89 & SR 9 to ZION without the 5er.
Just wanted to share the info - BTW does anyone have any knowledge of Kadachrome SP near Bryce canyon?
Read some great reviews and the satellite views are good, but, first hand knowledge is always best. in advance.

Can be accessed through your Good Sam online account by selecting trip planner.
You can have it tell you where the GS RV parks are, private and public campgrounds, Pilot/Flying-J fuel stops, Camping World Stores, rest areas.
You can select warnings for tunnels, bridges, low clearances, propane and/or RV restricted roads. Gives you accumulated as well as point to point mileages along with turn by turn driving instructions. We like it and it's free.
We have found that it is easy to edit/change your itinerary as it automatically saves the trip every time you close the app.

Stayed at Kodachrome SP last summer just before it closed for repaving campground road. Highly recommend and close to Bryce Canyon NP.

By staying at Bryce Canyon "or" Zion you can see BOTH Bryce Canyon and Zion National Parks, the choice is yours.

The tunnel you are referring to is "controlled" for one-way traffic when trucks, tour busses or RV's use it. This standard practice allows high clearance vehicles to utilize the center of the tunnel.

Willow Wind RV Park in Hurricane is a very nice and close to markets, coffee shops, ACE hardware and fast food.

We live in Hurricane and have made several day trips to Bryce Canyon from our home.

Suggestion: Take I-15 to Utah Hwy 9 and stay at Willow Wind RV Park for several days to see Zion, pack up and continue on Utah Hwy 9 to Utah Hwy 89 to Utah Hwy 12 and stay at Bryce Canyon (Ruby's RV Campground - ask to stay at the employees campground across the street, quieter and shorter walk to grocery store, gift shop, restaurant). Return on Utah 12 to Utah Hwy 89 and go north to I-70.

Hope that helps ..... Don

Would highly recommend Kodachrome SP for a very pleasant off the beaten path place to stay. Excellent campground for either hook ups or dry camping. Besides being reasonably close to Bryce, there is also Red Canyon as well as some slot canyons close by (Willis Creek, Bull Valley Gorge) if you really want to see the back country. As stated, they will let you through the tunnel if that's something you really want to do. Or stay just outside of Zion in one of the several RV parks in Springdale. A short backtrack will put you back on I-15 NB to Cedar City then Hwy 14 to 89 and then 12 towards Bryce and you can avoid the tunnel altogether. Personally I wouldn't fight the traffic through Zion in the summer and 14 is a very scenic drive in itself.
Feel free to PM me if you'd like more details.
Happy Trails!

Thanks for the responses - good info and we appreciate folks with local knowledge sharing their expertise.
The GS Travel Planner had us going north of Cedar Creek on I-15 then across to U.S. 89 on Hwy 20, then back south to 12.
We've decided to stay at Kodachrome SP. We have budgeted 2 days before we head for Colorado so we might not get down to Zion - depends on how much time we spend at Bryce canyon, but, it's all good!
We like the idea of driving Hwy 14 instead of 20.

Zion NP is a place I truly love to visit. But NOT during the peak sumer season. The place is a total madhouse. Bryce will be busy but because you are above the canyon looking down it won't seem quite as crowded. 89 back to I70 is a good 2 lane highway. Definitely no need to go back to 15. If you could fit in a couple more days Hwy 12 through Escalante and over Boulder Mountain will put you in Capitol Reef NP. An easy days drive through some very diverse country. Again good wide 2 lane roads. The campground at Capitol Reef is one of my favorites. Hwy 24 at Capitol Reef will get you back to I 70. Lots of opportunities in that part of the country.
Travel well and be safe.
