What Size for New Brakes

The electric 10" x 1 3/4" brakes that are on my 2013 Passport have been discontinued for years. So now, after cannibalizing other parts is not an option anymore, what size should i get, 2" or 2 1/4"? There are kits available with assemblies and hubs so it should be an easy bolt on upgrade. I'm thinking 2" is plenty.

In the Dexter catalog, I’m not not seeing 10” X 2 1/4” electric brake assemblies. If you change brake assemblies you will also have to upgrade drum/hub assemblies as well. If you have Dexter axles, you might be better off just giving them a call and see what they suggest. If you do call them, be sure to have the numbers on your axles so they know what you have.

Yes sorry, there are no 2". I would have to go to with 10" x 2 1/4 complete assemblies, including hubs. Some have inner seals already installed too.

Sorry, I meant to say I'm only seeing 2 1/4" brakes in the 10" size, and no 1 3/4" brakes or 2" brakes either.

While I’m not a fan of electric drum brakes I do understand that a disc conversion may not be in everyone’s budget. If I was in the market for new brakes, I would research the biggest brakes available for the hubs that could be installed inside the wheels as measured in diameter and width. Larger brakes are always better. Adequate brakes are not adequate. A fully loaded RV traveling down a long steep grade with a critical emergency stop at the bottom of the grade is how brakes should be designed. My 10,300 lb coach came with woefully inadequate 12x2” electric dumb brakes with marginal wire size and all was wire nutted together at the connections. I have read many posts by those that consider this design satisfactory, I do not so I did my homework and made a change.

Agree bigger brakes are better, its criminal how the industry dances with pressing limits like weight and load capacities. just because a half ton can tow 10,000 lbs (like in a commercial) doesn't mean it should. Man that's a white knuckle drive! And how they get away from no vents over an oven is crazy.

It looks like 10" x 2 1/4 are the biggest I can go without changing axles (#84 spindles).
My old drums measure 2 1/4 deep, does anyone know if I can use the same drums?

I installed larger, new 2 1/4 drums and brake assemblies kit and now have excellent braking. IBC now sits at 2. What a nice safe feeling.
