Sound system options
I purchased an '04 Springdale 5th, Model 242FWREL. I know it has a sound system, however the slide was closed and I wasn't able to check this. Does anyone know if a USB port was included in the AM/FM CD player system? I'm also amazed to see that only one speaker exists in the main living area, another in the bedroom, both mounted in the ceiling. (I would have thought "stereo" meant 2 speakers near the unit lol!) Has anyone had experience adding speakers, ideally not in the ceiling, in these rigs? Thanks in advance.....

Ahhhh . . unless someone upgraded it, USB ports weren't available much in '04.

204Jordan -
I doubt if USB ports would be found in an '04 RV's stereo system and it is common practice for speakers to be mounted on the ceiling - even in late model RV's.

2004 I doubt it, but my 2014 came with 2 Charging Stations which include a USB port and a cigarette lighter jack, one in the LR and one in the BR. I'm going to see if I can get another and put one in the garage. Shouldn't be hard to add one.
As for speakers, mine came with a Sound Bar in the LR for the radio, DVD and TV instead of the speakers in the ceiling. Would be simple to add if you have the right spot to put it.

I was just curious. I've had an iPod since '02 which I can currently use to play back through the 3 yr. old system in my current 5th. Guess there wasn't much demand for that in model year '04.

Technology advances show up in houses and in cars/trucks a couple of years before it starts appearing in RV's. High end motorhomes are a bit different, but most of them are custom jobs with all the "latest and greatest" gadgets.
Not so for Springdale travel trailers/fifth wheels.
Our 2011 242 had 6 speakers, two outside (C) two in the rear of the main cabin ceiling (B) and two over the TV location in the front of the main cabin (A). They also were in the ceiling.
I would think that you have at least 4 speakers, two over the TV location and two in the bedroom... I wouldn't think the front/rear speaker arrangement was very common in earlier RV's. That started showing up around 2006 or so with the introduction of surround sound in travel trailers. Since the slide hides a part of the ceiling in your 242, you may just not be able to see the left speaker near the TV. Also, you might have two speakers outside just under the awning location.

Have not been able to get my bass, or rear living room speakers to work in my rig, although I think it is the dvd player that they are wired into that is the issue, not the speakers themselves. If for some reason the connection is broken to the speakers, I was thinking of one of the new wireless systems from Bose or Sonos? Not sure if the wireless system needs a ton of power, but would probably be overkill blasting surround sound while boondocking anyway.

Thanks for the advice, John. I'll be sure to check once we can get at it in spring (it's currently in storage out of town). The slide was retracted when we bought it and all that was visible was the one speaker in the LR. Hopefully there's a 2nd one in the ceiling above the slide.
