Hey guys I just got around to servicing the axle bearings on the Raptor. These are the first time they have been serviced since they were installed at the factory, so far I have found grease on the brakes on one hub , two nails in one tire, how it held air I’ll never know! But the thing that concerns me is on one hub I found what looks like hot spots on the bottom of the axle shaft and on the inner race on both bearings. Not all the way like if the bearing race had spun just more like stained where it was resting. I’m gonna try and attach pictures

Otherwise the bearings look at feel fine no abrasion where the stains are
Kinda wondering if it might be rust from sitting out in the manufacturer yard!

Just found time to service the axle bearings on the Raptor
So far I have found grease on the brakes in one hub , a tire with two nails in it (not flat)
My concern is on the axle shaft on one hub has what appears to be hot spots on the bottom of the shaft, not all the way around like if the bearing had spun
The inner race of both bearings have the same spot in one place
No abrasion where the spots are, otherwise the bearings feel fine and look fine
Your thoughts

From the photos I see that is an issue.. the discoloration is very normal.
Galling is another story..

Just me, (but I grew up in the business) but I'd replace all races, bearings and seals with Timken products and never look back..

This is on the left side of the rv drivers side if you’re sitting in the TV
Right side was fine
Other than the grease and nails

I contacted Dexter and sent them pictures and was told this is pretty common on trailer axles
They called it “grease staining “ I had never heard of such a thing. So I looked it up and the technical term is “fretting corrosion “ cause by the slight movement of the bearings on the loaded area of the spindle
I also found some reference to it buried in this forum somewhere
So tomorrow they will get some attention with some fine emery cloth, and proceed with with repacking bearings and get this beast off the jacks and back on four wheels

Well I have the axles bearings all repacked and installed
Torqued the wheels to 100 ft lbs IAW etrailer for 16 inch aluminum wheels with 1/2 inch lug bolts
Did a little 20 mile road test yesterday the brakes didn’t feel quite as strong as before so this morning I pulled the break away pin and tried to pull off
I think I could have moved it but it was break something! The 450 is a beast!!
Now I have to find the leaks on the front jacks
I cleaned everything off and run them up and down a few times and nothing is obvious
So I’m gonna put it back on the Lippert 6 point leveling system and watch and wait
Back to work tomorrow
