Brake Controller opinions

Looking for a good quality brake controller. From browsing the eTrailer website, the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 brake controller seems to be popular and gets very good reviews.

Any pros/cons for Tekonsha? Other brands to consider? What do folks like / not like about them?

I have used the same Prodigy in my last three trucks. (since '89) I had something else in the '89 for one trip ... did not like it but can't remember what brand. Once you set the Prodigy the brake feel is very natural .. not jerking or pushing. If it went bad I would not hesitate to get another. Their prewired, brand specific harness makes install easy if your TV came with tow package. JM2¢, Hank

Prodigy. Have used one (two actually, one went bad) for about 10 years now. Works well, easy to use, easy to set, has different levels of boost control that are changeable at the touch of a button. Like mentioned above, plug and play with the correct harness for your truck.

Heard good things about it. I have a draw tite because that is what the dealer put in for free. Seems to work fine but have nothing to compare it to.

Ten years and 3 trucks later mine works just as good as the day I bought it.

I also really like my P3. Very easy to set up and tweak on the fly. Wouldn't buy any other brand.

Yep, at least 10 years, 3 trucks, same Prodigy. Set it and forget it.

I've got one in my garage if you want to make a deal. Used it one season on my Jeep liberty pulling a small hybrid. Worked like a charm. Upgraded to a Ram truck with built in brake controller so I have no use for this now. Was going to put it up for sale in some forums and craigslist this week. You'll probably need to buy a wiring harness depending on which vehicle you have.

I dont think you will go wrong with the prodigy p3. I would get the cable made for your truck. It's just plug and play then...I installed mine myself in about 15 minutes. The only reason it took that long is because I dropped some screws.

The controller is really easy to setup. I have a 2013 Toyota Tundra pulling a Summerland 2800BH. First time I set boost to 1, and set power to 6.0. You can feel how well the brakes are stopping. As I drove I adjusted the power to 6.2 and boost to 2. Now it stops with ease. No jerking or excess pedal force needed, just stop like you normally would while towing and the controller does the rest.

Awesome piece of equipment...highly recommended!

I bought one in October after doing a lot of research like you. As others have said, it is very easy to install and setup on the fly. It has a lot of helpful presets/adjustments available depending on your towing needs and also a manual breaking control. I also liked the fact that I could order a pigtail (P3 to fuse box socket) exactly for my TV so I wouldn't have to splice/crimp the wires. The best thing about it is knowing I can brake safely and smoothly. Good luck on your decision.
