RV oven temps

The new trailer has a small oven (a feature lacking in the old trailer). The dealer warned me that they didn't do a particularly good job of keeping even temps - this particular one seems to run about 30-40° low. So far I have only cooked things for short times (under 20 minutes) and I wonder how well the oven will hold a temperature for a longer term

I know the trick of putting a large heavy tile in the oven, with at least an inch of clearance to edge for air circulation, to even out the oven temp swings. Any others, particularly for, say, baking, which is more sensitive to temp changes?

Re: RV oven temps

We never had any problems with the ones we owned. Temps were pretty spot on.
Tested our with an oven thermometer we bought. 3 different 5th wheels.
Ours were good, not saying yours is. Good luck.

Re: RV oven temps

50 degrees off is considered acceptable. Not in my world, but I don't build 'em.

Re: RV oven temps

There are a couple of things you can check to make sure your oven is operating properly. First, open the oven door and look at the temperature bulb. It should be in its holder, not touching any part of the oven and the capillary tube should not be crimped. If it is OK, then check the thermostat that's under the rangetop, right behind the oven temperature knob. It should be clean and the capillary tube running from it back to the oven burner/temperature bulb should not be crimped or bent in any "sharp angles".

The owner's manual states that the oven temperature should be +/- 25 degrees of the setting. ie: if the thermostat is set at 350, the temperature should be between 325 and 375. That's the 50 degrees chuckster57 mentioned. The "fix" if the temperature is outside that range is to remove/replace the thermostat. If you're still under warranty, I'd do some "checking" with a thermometer and if it's not working properly, get your dealer involved. Remember, Atwood's warranty is 2 years from the original purchase. That's longer than Keystone's, so you should still be covered, even in the spring. However, now is probably a better time to get the dealer involved.

Oh, and if you should consider removing the oven door, be sure to read the owner's manual before you start !!!!! If you "muscle the door off the oven" you'll be buying a new hinge assembly before the oven door will close properly. There's a trick to getting it off without bending the hinges, it's well described in the owner's manual. Any other way (except as described) is a "sure fire way" to damage your hinges.

Good Luck !!!

Re: RV oven temps

Thanks for that. I'm going to check my thermostat. My oven runs about 50 degrees cooler. Not a big deal. I have an oven thermometer, if for no other reason than it's the only way to determine if it's pre-heated.

Re: RV oven temps

Thanks for the answers! Will check the temps.

I have had residential ovens before that were high or low and learned to live with those, but I have also had ovens that wouldn't hold a temp and that made this like baking problematic because of too much hysteresis, when you could set an oven for 350° and have it swinging between 300° and 400° as the gas kicked on and off.

My wife bakes pies with perfect crust. Oven hysteresis can create hysteria on her part. Bad combination.

Re: RV oven temps

I do sourdough bread, and I have learned to use a thermometer in the oven.

Re: RV oven temps

I have cooked a leg of lamb in ours when it was too hot to heat up the kitchen in the S&B. It turned out great.

Re: RV oven temps

Dang people really use the ovens LOL . The only thing we use ours for is to store the breads and rolls we do all our cooking outside on a grill or open fire

Guilty. Garlic bread, bruschetta or baking frozen french fries.

Re: RV oven temps

A few things we have learned: Buy a $10 oven thermometer, also buy an insulated (small) cookie sheet and bake your goodies with the pans sitting on this sheet, and learn to bake on your gas grill outside. We have had great luck doing beef roasts and casseroles on the grill.

Re: RV oven temps

Maybe someone can help me out on this, but many years ago, I had a brand new residential LPG stove. The oven was off by 50 +/- degrees. The service guy pulled the oven knob off of the stud. Behind the knob was a small screw that he adjusted to "tweak" the temp setting. Might be worth checking out?

Don't know if that still applies or not, as we also only used the oven once to reheat some nacho's. The rest of the time... its the breadbox!

p.s. We are spoiled wit a microwave/convection oven that handles a bigger "payload", and doesn't eat up 0ur 30#ers.

GOOD LUCK!

Re: RV oven temps

Question; Since your outside grill is made to grill, how do not burn the bottom of everything if you are baking. We have the little Webber grill.

Re: RV oven temps

Bartbill, I drilled a hole towards the back of our gas grill and installed the aftermarket grill thermometer. When we do biscuits or a casserole I turn an aluminum pan upside down on the grate (as an insulator) and then put the actual cooking pan on top of the insulating pan. We then adjust the temperature with either propping the lid open a shade or turning the burner up or down. I have include a photo I took on the island of St martin in '15 where my wife made an English pasty on a charcoal grill on the deck because we had no oven. Yep, it was as good as it looks.
