Finally hit the scales!

I finally got out and hit the scales yesterday with my F150 EcoBoost and Passport 23RB.

Close to capacity on my truck, but I still have a few pounds to play with so that is good. The tongue weight is a touch high, but I did scale with the water tank (located in the front) full just to see if that pushed me too far over any capacity as we like to go to state parks and often fill the tanks at home so we don't have to mess with it when we arrive. I didn't have any food in the frig behind the axles) or in the rear storage pantry where we normally have a few cases of water, beer, coats, etc. So I think that should help shift some weight back off the tongue.

Looking at the weights, you need to adjust the hitch and bars a bit to put about 200 more pounds back on the front axle. That will help you a bunch with your towing.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a equal-i-zer hitch so I got to figure out if one hole up on the L brake is too much or not.

Just a "Rule of Thumb" I discovered when I was doing weight & Balance
for aircraft when in the Military. Beer by the case weights 25 lbs./case in cans
and 27 lbs./case in bottles. Water not so much...

I'm thinking you might need another washer or two.

I will have to check, but I think I already have all 6 washers in that the hitch came with.

Maybe not. Ford's manual, for some reason, says to return the front fender height to 1/2 the difference between hitched and unhitched height. That 200 pounds may have him in the right range.

I didn't know the Ford manual says that. The manual for the hitch made that statement. The manual is in the camper 5 miles down the road so I don't have my measurements in front of me, but as I recall the front was only 3/4" higher than the unloaded height with a full water tank.

Sorry Bob... I read an owner's manual once but MY F250 tows much better with the front returned to unhitch height and weight with the bars.. Your results may vary, but those are mine.

So if one hole up on the L brackets is too much you can remove a washer or two. The washers are the fine tuning mechanism.

Justin, thanks for sharing your weights. Would you mind sharing what size hitch you are using. I'm trying to select a hitch for a similar trailer and with your scale weights it's easy to see the ball park weight transfer. Thanks again.

Ford recommends returning at least 50% of the difference to the front. So both of you are sort of right. It must be between 50-100%. Overall I would say it was about right but it wouldn't hurt to try it with a little more to see how it handles differently.
