Window glass; temp repair suggestions.
Window glass; temp repair suggestions
I have no idea how, but somewhere on the freeway our window glass broke. It's about 31x9 inches and would normally open by turning a knob several revolutions.
We're on our way home, but home is about 1500 miles.
Looking for suggestions to make it freeway speed safe and rain proof. Weather man is usually wrong but you know he'll be right this time.
By the way, the glass is very shattered. It will probably fall out as I try to tape something over it. Maybe you can see that in the pictures.
Any ideas? By the way, I am near both a Lowe's and Home Depot.
Thanks

You might try some aluminum tape. It will stick good, but. It leave residue you’ll play heck trying to remove. Maybe try making an X first.

I had a break in, they broke 2 windows, looked like yours. I completely covered both windows (inside and out) with clear packing tape, making sure the tape extended beyond the frame.
I was able to drive the rig without one piece of glass falling off. Glass installer got the glass off easily, it took me a while to remove the glue residue.
Edit: wear protective gloves, glass is sharp, Don't ask me how I know.

Did you have to take your RV to the glass shop, or were you able to remove the window and take only that in?

And by the way...
Thanks everyone. I just finished.
The temp fix is complete... though it hasn't been road tested yet. I completely taped over the entire glass surface, both inside and out. This seemed to add a little structural integrity. But I don't think it would make it home if that's all I did. But at least if it falls out, it'll probably fall out as one piece. LOL.
I found a large sheet of what I would call corrugated plastic. Think, real estate yard signs, though technically they are too small. I needed a single piece 31 inches long. Turns out Home Depot sells a 4x8ft sheet of it for about $28. More than I needed, but plenty of material to make mistakes.
The window has three 90* corners, and one radius corner. This stuff was easy to cut and work with. I bought a fresh roll of Gorilla tape and generously applied that.
We'll hit the road again in a day or two. I'll report as to it's freeway speed worthiness.
When we get home I'll decide whether to disassemble the window and take the pane in, or simply order a new entire window. This little rectangle section pivots at the top of its 8in height. I may be able to slide it out the hinge assembly. But maybe not.

Good luck in your journey back to Sun City West, Mike! If it makes it, you know you'll have no trouble re-using that 'garage sale' sign back here!

Glass shop came to me. Once to measure and about 10 days later they got the glass and came to my rig to install. $378. I know the glass shop owner since my business (before I retired) was in the same complex.

I broke a similar window on the rear of our rig when I was washing it this past summer. I barely touched the glass with the brush and it went right thru the window. I called the dealer to ask if I could get it replaced under warranty and initially they said yes. But I couldn't get in for at least 45 days and we had a trip planned in 2 weeks. I said order the glass and I'll get it temp fixed. I took the trailer into a glass shop and had them cut and install a piece of smoked plexiglass. You can't tell the difference between the two windows that are right next to each other. Fast forward to the end of summer and I finally get the rig into the shop. At that point they informed me Keystone would not cover the glass. After talking with the service manager, he convinced me that the plexiglass was actually a better repair then replacing it with new glass. Here are two pics, one of the broken glass and the other take just before Christmas zoom in and you cannot see any difference between the two.

I just replaced one my 48”x 29” windows I broke the slider out of.
Dealership ordered keystone factory Window=415$,
butyl tape and sikaflex=25$.
Took about an hour to 45 mins just watched some videos and got advice on here.
If you can get the smaller portion off and just replace the glass you’ll probably come out much cheaper

You should be fine .I lost a window in New Mexico. Made the same type of repair . We made it home to South West Florida. It lasted several weeks until l was able to obtain a replacement window. The only issue was removing the glue residue left from the gorilla tape. I suggest removing the tape as soon as you can. I think I used acetone or goof off to remove the glue.

Busted mine a few years ago. I had to take mine to the local glass shop. Removed the interior screws and the inner frame came out. Then slid the window out to the outside. That's all there was too it. The glass shop matched the tint and tempered the glass and installed it in the frame. Maybe 2 weeks turnaround time for less than 200 dollars. Cougar wanted over 1500 plus shipping.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and insights. The patch job worked fine. As luck would have it the weatherman was wrong about the rain. But Murphy's law being what it is we drove in sub freezing temps for two days. Set the furnace to 55 degs and ran it while driving down the road. It was that or let the water lines freeze. And did I mention the sidewall blew out of the spare tire while it was mounted on the back bumper? Check out this pic...
It was manufactured mid-2019 and was never used. Never saw a blister or bump. Nothing. Yes, it was a China Bomb.
