Good Sam membership

We have been Good Sam members since 2013. We use it at campgrounds and gas stations. We take a long road trip in the spring, and the savings usually exceed the cost.
The trip planner is great - but I've gotta say I liked the old version better. I felt it was much more user friendly.
We also have roadside assistance and extended warranty. Last spring we woke up to a flat tire in a campground in the middle of South Dakota on a Sunday morning. Called roadside assistance. They were super! They found a tire repair shop open on Sunday (most businesses are closed on Sunday in SD), which was 50 miles away. They kept in contact with us to ensure we were taken care of.
We purchased the extended warranty because we travel the country. As our local repairman said, "if it's gonna break, it will be while you're bouncing down the road". So for us, it's peace of mind.

We took advantage of their lifetime membership back in 1998 when it was a fraction of what it is now. Back then, it enabled you access to their giant campground directory book, which is the benefit we needed most, and included their magazine, which was also something I found useful. Since then, they unbundled the magazine and we now have independent online directories, but the membership is a sunk cost, so there we are. I still pay for the mag because I find it informative. (Since I retired recently, I've been working my way through our back issues, paying new attention to the "destination" articles that I largely skipped before.)

We do take advantage of the gas discount, the campground discount if we stop somewhere that offers it, and the CW discount when we need something on the road and don't know of a local place that's better. We take their road service insurance, and have occasionally activated their extended warranty coverage before long trips.

IMHO the new version is TERRIBLE! It is supposed to be temporary; they put out a survey a while back as to what we wanted to see in a new version - but no information on when that new version is coming out.

AAA does have a web-based planner where you can adjust the route (unlike the current GS version) and you don't need to be a member to use it. It can show you AAA rated campgrounds (there is some overlap with GS). If you are an AAA member you can save your trips; if you are not a member you are unable to save them.

I use both of the above, in addition to Google Maps to figure out our routes.

We kept a GS membership for years. We usually hit Camping World twice a year and the savings usually breaks even for the cost of the membership. We gain ahead when we stay at Good Sam campgrounds. We usually stay at them twice or three times a season.

Go to
https://tripmaker.randmcnally.com/

It's the exact one that used to be linked through GoodSam.com; the old version that you liked. Also can upload to my RandMcnally GPS.

Mea culpa! I don't know when GS made the change - but it must be recently. The temporary planner is gone and a new one is in its place. You can now drag the route to change it, and it automatically provides a few different route suggestions (before you modify the route). Greatly improved. Still scoping out what it can and can't do.

Not that it presently matters as large group gatherings are verboten, but I spotted a notice on "RV Travel" about the demise of the GS rallies. See this link for more details.

That article isn't about rallies, the primary point is all the state directors have been removed. If the state and local chapters are shut down by corporate, the club really will only be a marketing tool as Lemonis said in the past.
