West Coast Trip

If anyone has any suggestions on where to stay or what we must see. Plans start in mid Aug going thru Ohio and on to South Dakota, then to Yellowstone then on to Seattle for 4-5 days then south to San Fran CA, then over to Pikes Peak Colorado and on to Oklahoma then out Interstate 40 back to Richmond VA. Thinking we will take 6 to 8 weeks and enjoy it.

You have certainly planned a great trip. We have been that way, although in reverse, a couple times. Both times we have visited Avenue of the Giants in northern California and wouldn't miss it! While in the San Francisco area we camped for a few days at Olema Campground north of San Francisco on Highway 1 and it was just fine. Large sites, great shade, and easy to get around.
Oops, missed a great one. While in the Colorado Springs area DO NOT MISS Skyline Drive just outside of Canon City. A very short drive and it is free.

Between Seattle and San Francisco, consider seeing Mt. St. Helens, the Columbia River Gorge, the Willamette Valley (especially if you're wine folks, ) the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, and the Northern California Redwoods.

One of the best days we ever had started with: https://www.nps.gov/mimi/planyourvisit/index.htm and ended with closing ceremony at Mount Rushmore. The launch control tour is quite fascinating. Closing ceremony is very moving.

A bit further north from the Olema Campground that Jim mentioned is Bodega Bay where there's all kinds of interesting things to do/see, including whale watching from the high overlook of Bodega Head. Bodega Dunes is a State Park (reservations required) without hookups but it's wonderful camping among the cypress trees and rolling sand dunes. Photos are from our stay just a few weeks ago. You have access to a huge beach and the dump site is free. Nearby is the Bodega Bay RV Park with hookups available but I haven't stayed there. Some seagulls did a sky-bomb on our truck at one point, so Alfred Hitchcock's legacy "The Birds" lives on.

We just stayed at the rv resort at cannon beach. Nice park, spaces seemed a little small. Nice facilities, indoor pool and hot tub. Easy bike ride/walk to the beach or downtown.

After Yellowstone you might think about Glacier NP if you have time. It's our favorite NP. If you go you must do the hike out from Logan pass visitors center to the hidden lake. The views are spectacular and you will see lots of wild life up close.
Also when at Pike's Peak you might also drive up Mt Evans. It's the highest drive-able road in North America and a little higher than Pike's Peak. Near the bottom is Idaho Springs which has some historical building and of course the Tommy Knocker Brew Pub!
There are so many things to see it's impossible to see it all. Some of our favorite memories are places we just stumbled upon. Have fun

BTW, We're up in Hanover close to Kings Charter.
