50 amp service v. 30 amp
New to 5th wheeling and out Montana has 50 amp service, just curious if we hooked into 30 amp what would be the out come of that. My first guess is not to use the AC but not sure if any other negative effects to the overall electrical system would ensue.
Just curious
Thanks
Chris

You can use everything in your rig including AC. Most of the time the 50 amp service is there for a second AC unit or if you are running washer/dryer.

You can run everything just not at the same time. A/C and micro together may pop a circuit. May want to run Water heater on propane. Once your combination of running appliances hit the 30 amp. draw you're done

With a 30A service, there are still limitations on what you can use and not use and you will not be able to "use everything in your rig including A/C". While you cannot run two A/C's at the same time, you need to be mindful of what other high amp items that you have going at the same time. If you have, for example, the HW on electric, turn on the microwave, and plug in the toaster/coffee pot/electric frying pan, then the breaker may trip.
If you run one A/C plus the microwave, the breaker may pop having used these two items. However, don't forget about the HW heater and the converter running in the background.
With a 30A service, one still has to pay attention to just how many items you can have going at the same time.

No one has mentioned it, but you do know that you will need an adapter to plug your 50amp plug into 30amp outlet??? ..... Just checking, Hank

With the proper adapter, the single 30 amp leg is split to feed the two legs that normally carry 50 amps each into your rig. You can load, by running things in your rig, either or both legs up to a combined 30 amps, but not over, or you will trip the 30 amp breaker at the pedestal. With a 30 amp service, you have up to 3,600 watts, compared to a 50 amp service, which has two 50 amp legs, where you have up to 12,000 watts of capacity. Like was said previously, run your fridge and water heater on gas only, and you can run most anything else, one at a time.

We use 30 amp service all the time with no problems. Often times we have been at camps that do not offer 50 amp service. We did blow the circuit breaker one time when we had the microwave, electric fireplace, and a hair dryer running at the same time. Otherwise, all has been good.

To be prepared, have a 30 amp adapter on hand in case you need it. 30A is certainly better than no power.
