As mentioned in many other similar posts. Once loaded the pin weight on a 10,000 lb. GVW 5th wheel will be closer to or >2000 lbs when it is loaded. Forget tow ratings ... Payload, payload, payload. Also consider the weight of your gooseneck adapter which may void any frame warranties. Travel safely, Hank

My opinion is just that, my opinion. I think you traded the perfect tool for one that is not perfect. A great truck but not suited for what you want to do with it. I think you will be over on axle rating and on payload as that trucks payload looks to be in the 1400 pound category. http://www.ford.com/resources/ford/g...rv&tt_f150.pdf

This should give you some info. Sounds like the decision has already been made tho, so safe travels!!

I think Hank has it right. I traded my 2011 Tundra for that very reason. The newer 1/2 ton PUs will do a pretty good job pulling a fairly heavy trailer but, when pulling a 5th/W, it is the payload that gets in the way. When I went to a 5th/W I moved up to a heaver duty truck.

I agree with the others. In Aug '11 we traded a 08 F150 SuperCrew Lariat 4x4 w 16K mi. that I ordered new for a gently used '09 F350 crew cab Lariat diesel 4x4 w 39K mi. I don't regret the trade. I presume our trailers are similar in weight. I have a cherry '95 Ford Flare side for a daily driver, hence the low mileage on my trucks. I wouldn't want the diesel for a daily driver, but when it comes time to haul the camper I'm glad we have it. I'm afraid you'll miss everything but the fuel mileage on your F350. There is no comparison in frame, axels, brakes etc.

Well the resone I traded the trucking (F-350) is that the transfer case went bad on it and the Power steering pump went out with in 2 days from each other..It was gonna cost me $3400.00 to fix it all and plus my 16 year old boy uses it for school when I am gone for 2 weeks to work...I was looking at the 3/4 ton but the guy at the FORD plus the dealer ship where I bought the 5th wheel from all told me the ECO Boost is the way to go....So I gues I will see.

When I ordered the F150 I had no plans on a 5th wheel. Later I got married for the first time, and inherited a family. We later purchased a cherry '91 Excel and made afew short trips with it. I had a 3" leveling kit and a heavy duty add a leaf in the rear. Truck actually handled the weight rather well, but with wife, 3 kids and a boat in tow, we were way over weight. We found the family enjoyed camping and we wanted to take longer trips. The F350 allows us to do this comfortably. I would not worry about my wife or step-sons pulling with this. I do think for a daily driver you'll like the EB. I've heard many positive comments on them, and would have one if buying a F150 again.

Well the camper is a X/Lite and wt is 7100 lbs, The hitch wt is 1110 lbs and the Payload on the truck is 2310 lbs, Just looked it up on the catalog and on the sticker that was on the window. So we will see what happens.

There is a yellow & white sticker on the door post that will tell you the payload as equipped, but that does not include everything loaded in the truck as ready to camp... for this you will need to visit a CAT Scale at the local truck stop... $10 for the real answer... So load up, fuel up and hit the scale... subtract the actual weight from the Gross Vehicle Weight as listed on the White sticker (also on the door post...)

For reference here is mine...

My guess is the camper weighs more than advertised as well as truck payload is less than advertised, I know mine is on both accounts. Only way to know for sure, is do like Javi said and load up and hit the CAT scales. Keep in mind a 5'er should have a pin weight around 20% of the trailer weight to pull well. This may not be what you want to hear, but you did ask for "opinions".

Some just have some facts layered in!!

My 250 is much heavier than the door post indicates, btw.

The 7,100# trailer is empty as it comes from Keystone. That means no propane, no battery, no second air conditioner. It also means none of your stuff. The GVWR on the trailer is 10,000# - your numbers from your first post. If you are going to calculate towing capacity of the truck, you really need to use GVWR. Your 3.73 gears most likely give you 11,000# pull rating so you are under there. But not by a lot. I like a 25% margin there whenever possible. My Cougar's GVWR is 11,485#, but my SD is rated to pull about 16K# which gives me great comfort. My last truck was rated to pull 12,400# and it struggled on hills with the same trailer.

You told us most of the info about your truck except which cab it has. According to the payload info on Ford's towing guide, the payload is most affected by the cab style. Where did you pull the 2,310# payload info from?

We're having this same conversation with another member in another thread. He thinks his payload is over 2,600#, but the towing chart says it's 1,700# at most because he has a SuperCrew. That's a huge difference, and I am concerned that you may have the wrong numbers as well.

Let's put all the info on the table and see what it looks like.

Mine is a Crew Cab 4 door with a 4x4 off road package and or tow package...When I went in to look at them the guy at the dealer ship had a chart their that he showed me and he said the Pay Load on the truck was 2310 lbs...Now I have looked it up on the internet and I'am getting numbers all over the map as well..I will call them tomorrow and ask him again on it.My best friend went in today and bought the same truck in a red color and he has a toy hauler and he said they told him the same thing on the Pay Load.
Should it be on the side of the door on the truck? I'am at work right now and can not check it but if it is I can have my wife give me the numbers.

You plan on traveling with the trailer totally empty just as it came from the factory??

2014 Keystone Cougar 27 BHS

Shipping Weight 7177
Carrying Capacity 2733

Shipping is 7,177# or so depending on options, so say you add about 1/3 of its carrying capacity about 900# now the 5er is at 8,000# and 20# of that is 1,600#. Now 2,310 - 1,600 = 710# for driver passengers and any stuff carried in the truck like the hitch.

That and the F150 at the 7,700 GVWR is running close to 95% of axle rating.

Like I said I just talked to him and he assured me that I have more than I need to pull the 5th wheel with..But you know how car sales men are.

Please keep in mind the tow package is different than the heavy duty package that it looks like you are pulling your numbers from. The HD package on the F150 comes with LT tires and 7 lug wheels. If you don't have those two tail tail signs you don't have the HD package. FWIW I have yet to see a HD packaged ecoboost F150 yet.

I do love my ecoboost and it does pull like a champ, but I would not go much bigger than my current camper as payload cap gets taken up fast by just two people and 36 gallons of fuel.

Look In your door jam. 7700# GVWR you have a 1840# payload. 8200# GVWR you have 2310# payload.

So here is the deal being that I just bought the truck on Wed the 15th,Should I just go back and exchange it for a 3/4 ton F-250 or should I keep it? Now I will use my 5th wheel say 6-7 times this summer..That's the good thing about the forum you learn all this...I should of had this conversation before I bought the truck...But hey I can always take it back being that I just got it....

If that works send photos of the combo. I might rethink the uses of my ranger or explorer as my trailer towing vehicle.

The 2,310# payload is for the 8,200# GVWR option.

In your opening post, you list your truck with the 7,700# GVWR package. Your correct payload is 1,840#.
