Why do you need a pump strainer?

In case anyone was wondering why an inline water pump strainer is a good idea. I check and clean mine at the end of each season while winterizing. After three seasons, I am still capturing manufacturing debris coming out of the freshwater tank. Simple insurance for less than a $10 investment.

Sounds like a good idea. I never knew one existed.
Is this the one you used?

We use the FW tank quite a bit dry camping and I never thought about filtering the water as it came out of the tank. I do filter the water when I fill the tank.

Picked this same strainer up after reading a post about its benefits a few months ago. Haven't gotten around to installing it but am going to do so before next trip out in Nov. Trailer is currently in the storage yard.

So, here is a really dumb question. I'm not sure how this installs. Assuming the blue plastic clip end somehow clamps on to the pump inlet and the incoming pex to the other end?

I haven't been able to find any videos or pics that illustrate the installation and perhaps my brain is working backwards, but the arrow on the strainer that indicates flow is pointing towards what I believe is the pex side (the end without the blue clip). This seems to me to be opposite of how I think of the water flow going.

This is for a FloJet pump with quick-connect fittings. Slide the blue tab up, pull out the fitting from the tank. Insert the strainer into the pump, push the tab down, insert the tank line into the strainer and push that blue tab down…..done.

I filter the water going into the tank, but the debris I keep pulling out is comprised of bits of plastic from when they drilled holes into the tank during installation. Eventually it will be gone, but in the meantime my pump will be happy!

Glad you mentioned the "tank line". Some Dummy might have installed it on the field side

OEM Sureflo 4008 water pump has the strainer built in as well and I have removed mine each year and still find the occasional piece of junk trapped in the sediment filter…

Water filter for Flojet pump

NH_Bulldog Since I've never messed with the water pump, I just want to be sure I've got the correct lines. The hose in the picture with the red line, going into the pump with the blue clip, is the water line from the fresh tank-into the pump, correct? Thanks for the instructions in your earlier post. This seem pretty straight forward.

Yes, that is the suction line from the tank to the inlet side of the pump. The outlet side of the pump is the blue PEX and typically a “tee” fitting where the city water line connects

Depressurizing water line before filter removal?

I assume I need to release the pressure on the water system before I pull the strainer out to check for debris. What is the best method of doing that? Can I just turn off the pump and open a hot and cold valve until the flow stops? Yes, I am assuming I am not connected to city water at this time. Thanks!

Yep, that's all you need to do and before you unclip that blue clip, make sure you put a towel or rag down on the floor under the fitting. It will leak, probably about 1/4 cup of water as you pull the fitting out of the pump.

Keep the O-rings clean and don't lay the strainer on anything that could pick up dirt, grit or grime. Wipe the O-ring with a clean rag and apply a light coating of silicone plumber's lube before reassembly. While not "mandatory", it will help keep the O-rings pliable, help seal the fitting in the pump and make separating it next spring/fall a little easier.

Thanks John! Great advice. Just added it to my growing list of annual RV maintenance items.
