Storage locks

My fifth wheel has three outside storage doors
With locks. I was told anyone with a lock like these with a key they can be opened. Is this true? If so can they be re keyed? If so where can I get it done? Thank you

If you have a 751 key, almost every RVer has one on their keychain. Every Trailer that I have owned has had a 751. There is a lot of duplication with the other keys, also.

Most of the RV doors are very easy to break into. A small pry bar or large screw driver will do it. You can get new bolts at most RV supplies, but it will not buy you much.

as the old saying goes........"A lock is only there to keep an honest person honest".....you can buy new cam locks that are keyed to something else...

Some leave the 751 locks. Better to let a thief get in easy than pay for damage they speculate. Some do not even lock the compartments.

I'd rather make it difficult so the thief moves on to easier prey.

The "Blank" - NON cut Keystone key is the default storage room key ....

I got a couple blanks from my dealer and sure enough they are identical to the storage locks.

It's quite silly if you ask me - but like mentioned above they aren't that secure so don't trust them to keep thieves out.

The problem is that all you need is a screwdriver. Stick it in the slot and turn it. Those cam locks will turn every time.

You can remove the locks and take them to a locksmith. They can be rekeyed. If I remember right it was about $5.00 a lock to have them done. I realize that it only keeps the honest people out but a different key might stop some other ones from using the 751 key.

They are likely FASTEC, You can email or phone them and get any locks keyed any way you want. Look at the door key and or lock both have a number like 408? than if you want all other the same thats what you order. I like all keyed the same so it is less keys to carry and do not jam the wrong key into a lock etc. Do not fool yourself about keeping bad guys out. Anyone with a pry bar or screwdriver can get thru the doors or storage areas is seconds if they want no matter what lock system you use.

As others have already eluded too, take a look at the locks and how much of the cam is actually engaged on the lip of the compartment, then look at how sturdy the metal is, then think about how difficult would it be for someone to actually break is with nothing more than a screw driver. Also, the locks aren't any different that the ones on a metal file cabinet. During one of our moves the keys disappeared, it took me all of 5 seconds to stick a screwdriver into the lock and turn it. Bottom line, there is nothing secure about these compartments. I look at the locks as nothing more than insurance that the door will remain closed while traveling as it keeps the lock from turning due to road vibration. Once I'm set up at the campground, I don't even bother.

I replaced all mine with the high security barrel locks from http://www.fjmsecurity.com/Tubular-Cam-Locks.php . But like others have said, it only keeps the honest people honest...

One thing to note even with these locks is that all it will take is a pair of vice grips or heavy duty pliers to twist and unlock them. There's nothing to keep the whole lock assembly from rotating save for how tight you attach it to the door. They are more secure than the stock ones (only need a flat screwdriver for them), but not by much. Need something square or rectangular with the same kind of key and retracting bolt to really do the job.

I have been camping for 20 years at Nascar tracks. I have left bins propped open for 2 or 3 hours by accident before and never lost anything. (knocks on wood).

When I park it for winter I empty everything valuable out of it. In season I am just like eveyone else. If they are going to steal it they are going to do it with or without locks if they want it bad enough.

FWIW, while I did my stint as the Institutional locksmith, I found that style of lock extremely EASY to pick. They are harder than the 751 key though.

Same here. I pull the mats, chairs, stove, dishwashing station, pots and pans, set it all up and that's where it stays.

My locks are FIC. I have 2 exterior entrance doors, outside kitchen, shower, and 2 compartment hatch locks. Drove me nuts using 3 keys, especially for the doors. I took the key number from the best door latch and went to FIC website http://www.fastecindustrial.com/products/default.html and ordered a new door latch and all the compartment locks keyed alike. Wound up with a lot of spare keys, even ordered more keys that have built in LED light that's very handy. The cam locks were very reasonable and replacing everything only took about an hour. By the way I did this after our second camping trip and will do it again whenever I replace this unit.

Like so many others said,I found some decent cam locks online. I now have 3 additional keys on each key ring, but it looks more daunting than the standard 751. You can only do so much.
I put a bunch of work into protecting our propane tanks and batteries but the storage doors are tough to beef up.
