Is there a legit way to know the REAL tongue weight? I’ve seen a scale looking thing that kinda looks like a bottle Jack, but it would be silly to invest in something like that!

Here is a method I found on another forum from a very experienced RVer/tower on how to take you weights at the CAT Scale:

You need to weigh three times:

1] TV only, without the trailer
2] TV + RV, but without the WDH bars engaged - place them in the bed of the truck.
3] TV + RV, with the WDH bars engaged

Analysis:

Using tickets 1] thru 3], add the weights on the front and rear axles to get your GVW.

Subtract GVW 1] from GVW 2] to get tongue weight (TW).

Subtract GVW 3] from the listed GVWR of the TV to determine if you exceed the payload capacity of your TV. If the answer is a positive number, you're good to go. If it's a negative number, you're overloaded.

Subtract the gross weight of your rig from the GCWR of the TV to see how close to the max tow rating you are.

Ensuring that your trailer tongue weight is correct is silly? I'm done and out. Good luck to you.

He didn't say ensuring his tongue weight was silly. He said buying an expensive scale was silly (when he can use CAT scales.)

He never said that either.

Perhaps he will clarify his intent.

That's exactly what I said. If you go through the thread it talks about exceeding my TV payload. Most seem to agree the advertised tongue weight is simply advertised and not the real weight. So I asked, what's the BEST way to get a tongue weight without investing in an item like this:
https://www.amazon.com/Sherline-LM-1...07REJTGI&psc=1

It's 150 bucks and I would use it a couple times only. If there's a much cheaper method to know actual tongue weight, why wouldn't I go that route?
Then again I suppose on the CAT scale the real axle weight is what it is no matter what the tongue weight of the camper is.

Mark gave some good instructions on post 22 telling how to use the scale to get the pin weight...which is the way I would recommend vs buying the Sherline.
