propane tank recertification

My 30 lb tanks will need to be recertified early next year and I was wondering it anyone has had this done and how much it costs. The tanks look brand new so rust isn't a problem but from what I have read they have to replace the valves. Obviously, if it is too pricey it may be more cost effective to buy new tanks. in advance for any help.

I've had scuba and fire extinguishers hydro tested but never propane. Must be something new. It just seems like they come up with some type of new safety device and make you change them every few years. I'm going to have to look into this now. Thanks for the heads up. ...... Although I do remember something about ten year limit on filling. It's tough getting old. (even for a propane tank I guess) I would think it would be more practical to replace them.

Found this on a site called Propane 101:
Cylinder Certification and Recertification

Cylinders are subject to recertification (also known as requalification) twelve years from their date of manufacture and every five years after that. For example, a cylinder manufactured in January of 2000 will have to be recertified in January of 2012 meaning if you take your bottle to the propane company in April of 2012 to be refilled, it will have to be requalified by authorized personnel before it can be filled. The recertification process is simple and does not take too long to complete. Think of cylinder recertification as an inspection similar to that of your car. A vehicle has to be inspected annually so that it may continue to operate safely on the road. Similarly, a propane cylinder must be inspected so that it may continue to operate safely in LP Gas service.

danimal, Howdy;

Cost to upgrade to new valves about $35.00 to $50.00
Cost of new cylinders $100.00 each + or - a few bucks...

Only $63 at Home Depot, I think I would rather replace it and not have to worry for another 12 years, since rebuild is only good for 5 years. JM2˘, Hank

danimal, Howdy;

Why not just call your local propane dealer, the
one the has the trucks that fill the tanks at folk's
homes, as they will be certified to do the inspections.
See what the inspection entails and costs then
make-up your mind.

Thanks for the responses. I think I will call a local propane facility and see what they charge.

Propane Tank Recertification

I work with Hazardous Materials this is just one of many regulations I have to abide by U.S Code 49 CFR Section 178.35 General requirements for specification cylinders. You can Google this and will tell you more then you want to know about cylinders

This is just another great example of some group that lobbied the idiots in Washington to enact a new law which will benefit them, the LP industry. All these years we've had zero problems with LP tanks and now we have this lovely new law which in the end, will cause people to pony up $$ to re-certify or replace perfectly good LP tanks.

What a joke . . . . on us.

Tom, it's not a "new law." The tanks on my 1972 Jayco Jayraven had a recertification requirement. That requirement has been around at least 40 years. I don't remember if our 1968 Airstream had "dated tanks" or not, but I'd almost bet it did. The only "recent" change in LP tanks that I'm aware of is the 80% fill valves that became a requirement about 5 years ago.

As I understand that change, it was caused by an increase in propane leaks causing flares or fires from BBQ grill tanks sitting in the sun and the heat caused expansion and leaks resulting in several burns. RV propane tanks were never a part of that problem, but fell into the requirement since "all" protable LP tanks were "regulated" because they could be used in the "hazardous environment."

TOM EVER SEE A PROPANE TANK BLOW? Not good. here in ct a person put a 20lb tank in the car after filling it. in the heat of the day the tank leaked ( later determanded the tank was past inspection date and was rusty) then when the owner came back after shopping hit the remote to unlock the car spark boom 2 dead 5 cars destroyed . so if you ask me a new tank is cheap!

Tom,

Some government regulation is necessary. Check out this video of "people without rules" and you'll see why the DOT, FAA, State Police and others enforce rules established for the "common good".....

I'm glad I don't live in an area where people subject me to paying for them to sit on railroad tracks and ride on top of trains or in overloaded ferries.

I have about a half dozen 20 pounders that had to be recertified. A friend worked at a place that traded them in he replaced all mine for $5 each about 7-8 years ago.
