Towing 2012 Alpine

I pull a 2012 Alpine with my 2003 Chevy 2500HD, 8.1 Vortec V8, Allison 6 Speed Transmission. Specifications on the truck are below

2 Wheel Drive, Crew Cab, Short Bed
Pullrite 18K Hitch
Towing Capacity 16,100
Bed Capacity 4,058
CGWR 22,000
Rickson 4500lbs rated Rims
Toyo 4500 lbs rated Tires
Air Lift Air Bags INFLATED to 65psig when towing

I weighed my camper loaded and it is as follows:

Trailer Weight 14,600
Trailer Axles when hooked to trailer 11,500
Trailer Hitch Weight 2,840

It pulls like there is nothing behind it. It barreled up the hill from Barstow, which is 16 mile heavy incline at 40MPH. Gas mileage does SUCK. I also have all the tires setup with TireMinder TPMS TMG400C-4

If it pulls like "Nothing is behind it" why is Barreled up the hill only going 40 mph?

If it pulls like nothing is behind it then you should be able to travel at speed 55 mph or greater. I travel a lot of two lane roads with hills, and there isn't always a passing lane, I want to be able to pull those hills at at least the posted limit of 55 mph. I can do that with my 01 Cummins and a 12K 5er, but I know it is back there!

I'd look again at your numbers again. What I found for your truck was more like 10,300 lbs, which is a far cry from your number. My 2009 with a Duramax is only 13, 900.

Reminds me of a friend's embarrassment when struggling up a hill, he was passed by a front end loader. :-)

There seems to be another problem here, How did you get a 6 speed Allison in a 2003?? As far as I know they didn't put in the 6 speed until 2006, I know my 2005 was only the 5 speed. We also need several other numbers: We need to know the TV gross and the TV's real weight ready to tow. With 2800+ pin weight added to the TV weight my put you over the TV gross. The older TV's gross is generally less than the newer. My gross on a 1 ton dually is 13000, so my guess is your's is somewhere in the 9 to 10K range so you need to add that pin weight to the actual (not GM spec weight) TV weight and see where you are.

I am quite sure that the 6 spd Allison for diesels didn't arrive until '06 but for his older ('03) gasser it might have been a feature then. ????

Bob & Cheryl, First Welcome to the Forum
The question to ask is not "What can I Pull" because these new trucks can just about pull a house. The question you need to ask is "How much weight can I carry?" Also you don't say if you're thinking TT or 5er. If TT you're pretty good to go provided you stay in a length compatible with the Short Bed, too big and you end up with the "Tail (TT) wagging the Dog (TV). If a 5er you'll need to understand the load capacity of that SRW Short Bed and stay within that and your Rear Axle rating.

Why are you guys throwing Chivas under the bus??? Is this diesel snobery??
The poor guy just asks?? My brochure for a 03 with the 5 speed Allison (yes) show the numbers to be GVWR 9200 and the GCWR is 20,000 with a 3:73 axle and 22000 with the 4:10.

I've been considering the Alpines, and am trying to find out real-world pin weights to make sure that I don't overload my '12 F350 PSD SRW.

Which Model Alpine do you have?

All I have for pin weight is from the sales brochure, which is without options, battery, propane, or cargo. What options do you have installed? I'm thinking the front A/C will add the most to the pin weight. Also, when you weighed it as 2,840lbs, what was included? Battery, propane, water, cargo, firewood? I'm trying to estimate what I can expect a unit to weigh in at.

Thanks, Andy
