Rotten egg smell

My sister in law has an older truck camper and her fresh water smells like rotten eggs after she fills it and runs the sink faucet. Any ideas on clearing up this problem would be greatly appreciated. She has run bleach throught it but no luck. I suggested leaving it in tank and lines for a few days to a week.

Chlorine (clorox) about 1 cup per 40 gallons of water, more won't hurt.....run it until you smell chlorine at every hot and cold water faucet, let it sit overnight, flush, refill and it should be good. Remember, if there is sulfur in the water you put into the fresh water tank, there will be sulfur smell no matter what you do.

There is a note in the hot water heater service manual about this same condition and they recommend the clorox remedy.

You gave your sister good advise. Perhaps more bleach and be sure to run it through ALL faucets hot and cold till you smell bleach before letting it sit. (include outside shower if you have one, toilet and be sure to empty the hot water tank when you flush the system. RV stores sell fresh water sanitizer but bleach work just as well.

Also rotten egg smell can come from the anode rod in hot water heater so could get a new one to start with. If using well water to fill tanks the water goes after the mineral in the anode rod which then gives off rotten egg smell. I am a water softener man an come across this problem a lot. The first thing is to remove the rod completely but the warranty is then void on hot water heater but sometimes that cures the problem because the smell will travel back the cold lines as well. So my first choice is to get new one or remove completely or use city water. Good luck trying to help. Happy camping.
