Gas / Elect Water Heater Gas Not Working

Thought I've been having an issue for a week but today it didn't light . We turn it on when we get up to get ready for work. Could hear it tryint to light 3 times. furnace and stove work fine

With the time change getting up at 4 AM was bad enough so the cool shower was fine.

I can hear the valve click and it sparking so start with a look and general cleaning? Then where to

Thanks

Clean the ignitor with a toothbrush. Chances are there's a carbon buildup on the element. You should be able to see it as you open the outside WH door. There is also a possibility that the wiring is burned inside the ignitor element. The wire is really nothing much more than a sophisticated spark plug wire. Another remote possibility is a bad ground on the ignitor. Loosen and tighten the attachment screws to "clean" the ground. Good luck.
