Converter not working

Converter not charging battery. Is there anything else that could be the cause besides a bad converter? Fuses?

Be nice if we knew what rig and year you have. Is there a battery disconnect? If so, is the switch open or closed (ON or OFF)? If it's off, no juice will get to the battery.

Welcome to the forum.

A few questions:

What year, brand and model trailer?

Did the charger work previously or is this a new/used trailer that you don't know if it's ever worked properly?

Are you pulling the trailer out of winter storage and discovered the problem? Were the batteries stored on the trailer through the winter?

Have you tested the batteries or had them tested at a auto parts store or repair garage?

Have you tried to charge the batteries with a "stand alone battery charger" ?

Sorry. It is a 2009 hornet retreat 38kbts. There is no battery disconnect.

The battery will charge with a stand alone charger. The converter was replaced about 5-6 years ago and no further problems until the fall. Have had the trailer since 2014

Converter Fix

I had a similar issue last year. The hardest part was finding the location of the converter. Mine on a Keystone Sprinter was behind the circuit breaker panel. The panel had to be completely removed from the wall, then the converter was visible in the space behind it. The converter had two 35 amp circuit breakers that had blown (due to a power surge or lightning strike???). I replaced both of them and it's worked fine ever since.

Have you changed or disconnected the batteries lately?
There are reverse polarity protection fuses that come to mind if so.

Thanks for that guide, helped me get it done! I tested the current at the converter connections and it was 1V, so I bought a new RecPro 65 Amp to replace the 7 year old converter. It's the one with a manual switch, I'd read too many times that the auto-voltage-select didn't work well on several brands. I leave it on the 14.6 It's been a couple months and all good. I've left on my fridge for a few days to drain it to verify. Mine was easy, our 2016 Hideout 308BHDS has an access panel below the fridge and plenty of space there luckily. (pics attached)

I also replaced the 7 year old deep cycle Interstate Lead-Acid battery with a LiTime 100AH Lithium-Iron "LIFEPO4" battery. It is NOT regular lithium. It's half the weight, same size and can be fully discharged 4000 times, worth the $259.

I installed the battery cutoff switch a few years ago, it's a heavy-duty marine one. I was shocked they sold trailers with no cutoff switch.

Great job! Gotta love being able to fix stuff yourself! At least at my house saving money makes DW smile.

I agree, most certainly! Plus not having to take and leave at the RV place or pay someone a lot to come out...
