What size onboard generator?

So, I've decided to bite the bullet and get an onboard generator for our rig. Our camper is "generator ready" and the specs mention "Onan 5.5kW specifications". I don't ever intend to run both AC units, and I'd probably turn off the AC if I needed to use the microwave, so my question is: Can I install a 4kW Onan generator (less expensive and less weight) or do I need to stick with a 5.5kW because that's what the rig is designed for? Any input/advice would be greatly appreciated.

You don’t have to install a 5.5K gen, but I would probably want to install one with 2 circuits.

We have had the 5.5 for our toy haulers and really like it. While we don't run the AC on the generator very often, it is REALLY nice to have when we want it. It is common for us to use this on travel days in rest stops and lunch locations which commonly also include the mandatory daily nap! Besides the AC and microwave, don't forget about the converter which will be charging your batteries when the generator runs - that can use quite a bit of power as well. Then there is the refrigerator, water heater, etc. It's pretty easy to justify the added capacity of the 5.5

We camp with friends who have the smaller 4.0 and to me, the smaller Onan unit seems noisier! If there is not a prohibitive difference in cost, I'd go with the bigger one if it was me.

> Does your rig have a fuel tank? How will you handle that?
> Does your rig have a transfer switch (to transfer power between generator and shore power)?

There's actually quite a bit to consider on your installation.
Best of luck!
Brad

This is why I LOVE this forum. Thanks for the quick replies and the valuable insight. Maybe one day, I'll actually be able to contribute to this forum rather than just benefit from it. Until then, thanks!

Durango, I realize I’m spending your morning neu, but go the $1300 more and 100 pounds more and get the 5.5. You won’t be disappointed. Ours is 7k propane and we just run what we want.
