Fresh Water Tank

Question for 5th wheel owners of Keystone Avalanche owners or comparable.

My 2019 Avalanche 35MB is spec'd at having a 66 gallon fresh water tank. I've been using a digital counter when adding water to my tank and only get about 42 - 45 gallons of water everytime I fill up. I even let water flow out the overflow to try and get all the air out of the tank.... But still only get 40 plus gallons of water.

Has anyone else experienced this problem or have any tricks?

Two things to remember when dealing with RV tank sizes...

1. The manufacturer will change the size without notice.

2. The fresh water tank size includes the water heater..

When you look at the specifications typically it will state "fresh water capacity" and not fresh water tank size. 42 or 45 gallons plus the water heater (6 or 12 gal) would get you close to the 66. They also add in the volume of all the water lines.

Thanks for your reply. I did verify with Keystone the capacity is 66 gallons. They did mention you loose 12 gallons to fill your hot water heater. Aware of that, and long story short, that should put me around 54 gallons. That still puts me 10 gallons shy.

Thanks for your reply. I did verify with Keystone and based on my Vin# they confirmed the size of 66 gallons. They did state a comment that 2/3's is realistically what you can count on for filling with room for air or air pockets.
Have you heard of this?

The tanks are relatively flat. They must fit in between the frame rails so they tend to be long and shallow. That does tend to trap air especially if the trailer is a little out of level in either direction. How much capacity could that account for I have no idea.

More than likely, there is still some water at the bottom of the tank that is not usable as the plumbing line that goes to the water pump does not go all the way to the bottom.

Try draining your tank completely with the valve under the trailer. Then meter the next fill up.

Still, if it fills the full 66 gallons, you now know you have available only 45 gallons. So, when camping, adjust to what's available.
