Which Hitch to get?

OK, unlike when I bought my 302RS and my GMC2500 HD last summer I am going to ask here first. After finding this forum "after" I made the purchases last summer I have found out that the Brochure and the Payload sticker on the truck were 500 lbs difference and not to the good So I only have 170 Lbs of leeway and that's without the Wife in the truck and the food and clothes in the trailer.

So, upgrading to a GMC 3500 HD Denali DRW. Sucks because we really like the 2500.

Anyway, 2500 has a 20K Super Glide installed. I can transfer it to the 3500 the 3500 (long) but it really doesn't need it. Also the 3500 has the GM 5th Wheel prep package which the 2500 did not.

Instead of reading brochures and getting it wrong again, which hitch should it go with? for instance, I saw the Curts A20 (want to stay at the 20K rated hitch) and it looks like a plug and play for the GM Prep... opinions welcome

Your post has me a bit confused. If I understand what you are saying, you already have a hitch in the old truck and you can use it in the new truck. But (it sounds like) it's a slider and you really don't need a slider in the new truck? Is this correct? And one more thing ... you've never had any issues with the old hitch? Correct?

If so, I'd keep the slider and put it in the new truck, especially if it's already equipped to install it. Why purchase a new one.

But, if you really want to get a new hitch, light weight, comes apart for easy removal, and very durable.... look into the Demco Recon. Demco now makes sliders, fixed, rails, puck and goose neck variations.

Or, go with something else, and you'll add the weight.

Unless the extra weight of your existing slider is an issue and you love to spend money you don't need to, I would simply transfer the hitch to the new truck and be done with it. You don't have to use the slider feature, just keep it locked in position and go about your merry way.

If you are looking for a cleaner install, I believe that you can get a base kit that matches the factory puck system in the truck and just change out the base instead of going with a whole new hitch.

You are correct.

Nothing wrong with it, just I would have to convert the base rails from the drilled in ones to ones that work with the GM prep

Thanks. Agree but the one problem is the Super Glide does not “lock”, unless I missed something somewhere. It’s an auto-slider

Plus it weighs a ton. There are many good options for capable hitches. And selecting a good hitch is, IMHO, less critical than making sure you have the right truck.

I like the Demco Recon because it is more than capable and easy to use. I also like the double latch feature which makes it nearly impossible to lose the trailer if you forget to put the safety pin in once you’ve connected the trailer. Additionally, it assembles in 3 pieces so pretty easy to install and remove without breaking your back.

There are many other options that are just as viable.

Good point!

So in that case, you can convert the base to match the puck system, or drill more holes in the bed if you wanted to reuse your existing hitch.

If you wanted to go with the Curt hitch, it is a good choice. I have the Curt A16 and love it (the A20 and A16 are functionally identical, with the A20 being about 30 lbs. heavier to get to the 20k weight rating). It separates into two pieces and makes the weight manageable if you need to take it out or put it in the truck. I like the articulated head and the interlocking 360 degree jaws. We have towed for over 6,000 miles with it so far and it has exceeded my expectations.

I had the Curt 25K hitch and had problems getting the jaws to release while unhooking my trailer. If you do a google search about it not releasing you will find many complaints.

Another vote for the Demco Recon. It has more than enough capacity and is easy to remove and reinstall if needed.

If I read your first post correctly, you said your OLD truck did not have the factory puck system, the new truck does have the factory puck system. So, to use your "rail type hitch" in the new truck, you'll need to purchase an adapter frame that fits the factory pucks and converts them to a "rail type hitch"....

Or, install rails in your new truck (Something that would make me cringe)...

Reese does produce an adapter, cost is roughly $400-500, depending on where you buy it.

So, you're going to end up spending half the cost of the Curt A20 or Q20 to equip your truck to install your old hitch.

If I were you, I'd look at the possibility of buying a hitch that fits your new truck pucks without an adapter frame and put your old hitch up for sale.

Right now, CARiD has the CURT A20 with GM puck legs on sale for $900
https://www.carid.com/curt/2014-chev...HAOMURIoAV3N0o They also have a military discount if you are eligible.

To me, it doesn't sound like a "great idea" to spend half the price of the hitch you want for an adapter to install the hitch that's too heavy to use and then possibly needing to buy a locking kit to keep it from "auto releasing" (which is not what you want it to do with your new truck).... Surely you can buy the CURT, skip the cost of the adapter frame and sell your current hitch for $500 and break even. If you can sell your hitch for more than that, you'll come out ahead in the long run. YMMV

Yep going to use the installed GM system..dealer asked if I would keep the super glide in the truck and he would pay extra for it. So that solved that question…..

Now to buy a new hitch to fit the GM puck system

Question though, with a new Hitch and truck, will I possibly have to reset the Pin? Or should I be able to adjust the hitch and not touch the pin to meet the 4-6 inch clearance?

My 2 cents here is just put a ball in the truck bed and get a 20K goosebox and replace the part on the RV, More room in truck bed and less weight.

We’ve used an Anderson hitch for over 4 years and it has been great. Light weight and easy to load and unload!

I see no reason why you can’t use the same hitch. I had the same hitch you have it was in a f250 short bed reason it’s a slider. I purchased a f350 and use the same hitch with no problem. I do have the puck system in the truck which makes it easy when I want to remove it. Pull a few pins and out it comes.

I am real happy with my B&W Companion in my 2017 F-250. It plugs into the factory pucks and comes apart in two pieces for easy removal and installation. JMO.

I have the B&W RVK3710 Companion Hitch for my Chevy truck with the Puck System. i've been extremely happy with it.

Pros: American made and a lifetime warranty
Cons: It's heavy

It weighs 166lbs assembled. If you are worried about cargo weight then you might look elsewhere. The saddle is removable from the base and weighs 75lbs leaving 91lbs for the base. Mines not a slider. I imagine a slider will weigh a little more.

I leave it in my truck normally, but have taken it out many times to haul material. Removal and reinstallation is simple. I haven't had a problem carrying either part at 62 yrs young!

Love my B&W hitch on my long bed truck. Works great and heavy duty. Here is what I paid for it a few years ago.
