Sailun Tire failures

I don't know if anyone has had issues with the Sailun Tires. I have a Carbon 358 and I have gone through 4 ST235/85R16 tires with less than 1500 miles on them. Each time the center tread has peeled off without the tire actually exploding. I was told by tire store to run them at 100 psi which I have been doing. So not sure why these 4 tires have had the tread separate like that. I am hoping that it was a bad batch. The 4 tires on the trailer are now a different batch. Let me know if anyone has had issues with Sailun and what you would suggest replacing them with for another H rated tire.

Welcome to the forum

What does the tire sidewall and the inflation placard on the trailer say?

What is the actual weight of the trailer; the load range of the tires (I assume G), the required inflation pressure from the trailer placard and how OLD were the tires?

The trailer fully loaded; water, gas, small tool kit, UTV will dress out at 15,400 lbs. According to the tire company these tires are rated at 4400 lbs each. So I am well under the total weight capacity.

Had the same size Sailun's on my '15 371 Fuzion. G rated 14 ply and 110 psi cold max pressure. Never had a problem with them in the 3-1/2 yrs we had the camper. I never even heard of a Sailun tire 10 yrs ago!!

I keep hearing they are a great tire but I sure haven't had any luck with them. The good thing is they don't explode, the center tread just peels away. All four times I didn't even know this until I got home. So I road on the outside tread with no problem.

I think your problem might not be the tires. I've ran mine for 4 years with nary a blip...and look like they would run another 4 years.

What does the placard on the camper say for tire pressure and GVWR/cargo capacity? Have you ever weighed your entire loaded rig? I suspect that you have a combination of being overloaded on the trailer and under-inflated on the tires.

In my experience, Sailun has been a very reliable brand. My brother has had them on his 2021 Fuzion 367 since new and they still look great.

What is the date code on the problematic tires? There was a Sailun tire recall? for some date range of tires made in 2021 I believe. I don't remember specifics about it, but a google search should get you headed in the right direction.....maybe your tires are in that group?

Yep, good call.... Here's the recall information. It affects Sailun RV tires made from week 20 in 2020 through week 41 in 2020.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced that Sailun Tire Americas, Inc. is recalling certain Sailun, RoadX, Blacklion, Blackhawk, and Ironhead brand tires, sizes ST235/80R16 and ST235/85R16 with DOT codes 2020 through 4120. Due to a manufacturing issue, the tires may experience a belt separation. Belt separation could lead to loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash, NHTSA says. Sailun will replace the tires, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed in December 2021. For more information, contact Sailun customer service at 1-844-281-9696, the company said.

Sailun Tires

I went back and checked and these tires that lost their tread are 1XJ and their range are from 3420. So they may have missed a recall. I will be hitting the road here in a couple of weeks and we will see if this new batch holds out.

Those tires are smack dab in the middle of the recall range...20th week of 2020 thru 41st week of 2020. Yours are 34th week of 2020 and were definitely in the recall group.

Recall

Where are you getting the tires? The dealer should have known about the recall. If the tires are under recall that would mean 100% free replacement.

Find a competent tire dealer.

FWIW, my last set of Sailun lasted 6 years and were still on the trailer when we sold it, and still looked good. The latest set are only 2 years old but doing fine.

Maybe the OP's tires are NOT INCLUDED IN THE RECALL.....

He stated above that his tires were made in plant code 1XJ with a date of 3420

The NHTSA Recall Number: 21T-018 states: DOT date range identified by factory code 1YJ and the last four digits of the DOT code are: 2020 – 4120

According to the tire manufacturing plant chart I have:

1XJ = TURK PIRELLI LASTKLERI, S.A. KOSEKOY, IZMIT TURKEY

1YJ = SAILUN (VIETNAM) CO., LTD. DONG WARD, GO DAU, TAY NINH VIETNAM

So, it's possible that the OP "misread the plant code" or it's equally possible that his tires were manufactured in a plant in Turkey and not included in the recall of tires made in the Sailun tire plant in Viet Nam, which is 6300 miles away on the other side of Asia.

I have Sailuns that are 3 years old and no problems. Sounds like your tires are overheating caused by under inflating. I run mine at 108-109 psi COLD and trailer fully loaded. Fully inflated tires run cooler and roll easier. They might be a little ruffer ride but they will last longer. Max psi cold pressure stated on the Sailun tire is 110 psi. Try running closer to 110 and that will likely solve the problem. I have heard all the different opinions but I have a neighbor that is an engineer with Goodyear and he says trailer tires should be inflated at or very near max psi on the trailer tire, then you won’t have any issues unless the tire is defective or you are very overweight. He recommends going by the max pressure rating on the tire, NOT the placard on the trailer. My neighbor says the tire manufacturer rating is more reliable than the trailer mfg. Case in point, my Montana high country came with E rated tires as OEM. They were rated too low for the rig and I had two blow outs. They have since come out recommending at least F rated tires in a bulletin they sent me. I went to G rated tires and no issues since. From the tire size you listed, those should be G rated tires and should be right for your rig. Fill them up to 110 psi, or within a pound or two and you should not have to worry about it. Happy trails.

I also had a Montana HC. I always thought it need higher capacity tires. I investigated going up on load rating. I was warned, probably on this forum, about overpressuring alloy wheels. I called Tredit and was told by one of their Engineers that if I over pressured the rating stamped on the wheel that they would likely have crack failures around the centers of the wheels.
Might be something to monitor or for you to personally investigate.

Have about 3000 miles on my Sailuns with no real wear on them. Maybe a bad set?
I also run them at 100psi
