30 amp Upgrade

Just curious how many people or what type of device did you use to upgrade your 30amp plug from the standard Y connection..I see there is one from Furrion, Marinco, and also smart plug..Seems like a pretty easy install.

Im sorry but what do you mean "upgrade"? are you talking about at the trailer? if so the three blade and the "twist lock" are both considered standard.

Seems pretty pricey just to convert to a different style of plug. The standard 30 amp connectors work just as well and are much easier to obtain when there is a problem.

Now I see...NOT WORTH IT in my opinion.

The kits come with the plug where you would cut your cord and replace the trailer connection..then you would attach the one end of the plug to the cord you cut off

I installed a Marinco setup on our previous TT to get rid of the mess of cable we had to untangle most every time we needed to pull the cable out. A nice bonus, as mentioned earlier, is to close off an easy entry for unwanted visitors, such as mice, ants, among other things. Relatively easy to do, just be sure to seal the new housing well to prevent leaks.

One possible caveat of a detachable power cord, is that some thief could easily remove and steal it, but I have not heard of that happening recently.

Some trailiers come with an "attached" 30A shore cord like mine. Some come with a detachable shore cord and the trailer end is either a twist lock or the 3 blades. This "upgrade" appears too change the trailer end.

My thoughts: if you experience issues with the cord your stuck. With either "traditional" style of the removable shore cords, you can buy a new one most anywhere. If you have an attached cord then changing to the removable style makes sense if there is a rodent problem.

I'm not sure what mouse hole you are trying to get rid of but that smart plug is just a swap from the standard twist lock to a more pricey clip lock.

Our trailer came with the "mouse hole" to pull the cable in/out. Replaced with marinco twist plug. This freed up the space where the wire was stored to install the EMS and central vac.

It also closed off an access point for bugs, mice, and moisture. Now if breaking camp in the rain no more "wiping down" the cable as it goes back in. I will take the cable around the other side under the awning, wipe off the water and mud then put it in the plastic storage bin and into the passthru.

I looked at the Smart Plug when it first came out but 3 factors turned me off. First the cost, just couldn't justify and Second is availability if for some reason you need to replace it. Third factor is the availability of twist lock accessories, for instance a twist lock female to 15 Amp dog bone. I use one of those with a 12 gauges wire extension cord if I just want to charge battery or run fridge to pre cool before a trip. Makes for a lot less fuss to put away (usually wrap it up and throw it in the bed of the truck after hitching up.)

Marinco is the "gold standard" for detachable power cords. It's almost all that you'll find in the marine industry.

There are several "other brand" kits on the market, some much cheaper (in price and with questionable quality). I can't say whether they are reliable or not, but I can definitely vouch for the quality of my Marinco kit that I installed in 2013 and have has no problems with it since installing.

Cheaper than the other fix.
Cord stays where it is and you don't have to find a new place to put it.
And it'll help fix the other mouse holes every trailer has in it.

I don't see a big advantage over my pull out cord. And i can spend $300+ in better ways.

Until a cold windy day, with rain pounding down on you and as you pull that cord out of the little hole, it won't come out more than 5 feet and it stops... There's a knot in the cord, inside the "cubbyhole" and it just won't pull through the hole. Until it happens to you, you may never "see a big advantage"... once it does, then you'll know. At that time, the decision becomes: Do I risk it again or do I fix it so I never face this "situation" again ?????

The link that John had in his post is $74.20 so don't know where $300 came from. In John's last post about getting it out of the mouse hole I've had the experience in the rain, cord lying in the mud where you have to "turn" or "spin" the cable to get it to go back in. That's not fun when it's raining and you're trying to get the water and mud off the cable to get it back in.

To me it was well worth the money. To each his own.
