If you mean the strut, I’ve seen it in new units. My honest thought-I’ve seen at 3 break the ball ends...not a big fan. It does make stowing them almost “weightless”.

That's what they call it.. Lift Assist, but yes I hadn't heard about the shock ball breaking..
The DW asked me to put one on ours because with the radiation aftereffects she has a difficult time lifting the stairs if she goes to the trailer by herself while I'm at work..
So I guess I'll oblige her.. and if it breaks.. I guess I can figure out a way to fix it..

The ball is threaded. Make sure the nut stays tight, I think that’s the issue.

Do you have a white hard hat for the DW?
For those asking what the H is he talking about... Back in the day, You could identify the "Union Boss" on a job site because they wore the white hard hats.

My wife had radiation and is taking meds that cause her to have pain in her shoulders and arms too. She also has trouble with the stairs on ours as well... I was not aware that they had lift assists... normally I'm the lift assist guy...lol..
might be worth looking into...

Haven't had any problems with ours yet and it really does help. When getting the stairs out you can just pull on them and let go and they will stop about half way down so you can step back and push them the rest of the way. When closing them you can lift with very little effort.

My 2020 Cougar 27SGS came with Morryde steps. I found out that they, too, have a kit for easy lifting. Ordered one and it took about 3 hours for me to get it installed and adjusted. We love it. At 71 I thought it might be too much for me, but I prevailed. Would recommend these 'assists'!

Our raptor came with lift assist for the front steps. It worked 3-4 times then broke the ball end. I could not find this "double-ball" part anywhere at the hardware store, Amazon, etc. Finally called Morryde and they mailed me one. In the mean time, I put 1/2 of the system back with a single ball. Never have replaced the other side. One of the many reasons I'm not a fan of these steps:
...(just sayin')

I can understand your frustration but the Lippert doesn't use that design ball. And if all else fails, I can make another.
My question has to be WHY are they breaking? And secondly could it be prevented.

Well ours was an addition that I installed on manual steps and has been working fine for some time. Maybe your factory one was defective?

Saw this thread and checked into the Lippert system for my Lippert steps. Looks like a very nice plan. Execution seems iffy as they only make their system with the piston on the left. In our Cougar that would mean not being able to use the left side doors of the cabinet just to the left of the entryway. Talked to Lippert to see if there was a way to get one with the piston on the right and was told that they cannot put it on the right because it will interfere with the door hinge. ??? I may be new to all this as we have only had travel trailers since the mid 90's but I do not believe I have ever seen rv doors that have the hinges on the inside as this would also mean the door swings in. Guess they just want to satisfy the left.

Well got them installed and working.
Wasn't bad, even for an woreout old man. Took about 3 hours all total.
Most difficult was wrestling the awkward thing up on the tailgate so I could swap out the different parts and then hauling it back to the trailer and aligning it.
I highly recommend that you don't try this on a drive with 1" white limestone fill.
I'm hardheaded and keep trying to work on that crap. Worse part is that I have a level and smooth concrete slab a 1/2 mile away.
The DW is very happy with the results...
