Storage under raised Rear Living

Have been looking at new 5th wheels for a few months now and have seen several models of rear living areas that are raised with loads of storage underneath. Has anyone had any issues with weight distribution? I'm particularly wondering if all that (possibly) added weight will affect towing stability? I can just imagine those rigs fishtailing down the highway!

I don’t have any personal experience, but have sold several of them to people who are full timing and have put a lot of miles traveling across the country. Have not heard anything negative from any of them.

Can it be any worse than tanks full tanks empty ?

Have no experience with it but sounds like a plus for the payload debacle.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a 5th wheel fishtailing?
Toyhaulers are designed this way, I know some have 3 axles, but not all & have no towing issues! It's doubtful you could cram the weight of a couple motorcycles or ATVs under that limited storage area, so I'm sure you'd never have a problem.

Excel Modeling and wt distribution

I also thought about purchasing the raised rear living 5er, after several discussions with Keystone I was unable to get a definitive answer on how much of the "cargo" weight I could put in the rear basement.

The reply : even wt distribution and never exceed GWR of axles and have equal distribution on each tire.....wowzer...that is a snap to follow....NOT!!

I developed a wt & balance calculator (excel) and have used it on three different units. And it was pretty close to actual scale weights.

It is very precise [that is NOT the same as very accurate], and requires locations and weight of all cargo, lengths, and wheel location. And for best results you would need a factory empty wt baseline. (axles and pin).

The accuracy diminishes as a result of the following primary reasons:

1. actual weight and locations being inaccurate
2. Inaccurate Axle location
3. Inaccurate weight of tongue, chassis, axles and/or pin and axle wt of empty unit.
4. model error in fulcrum location (dual axle tends to shift as weight is added)...the "wheel center" is fuzzy..
5. assumes cargo is added athwart (side to side) equally.....

As I stated it did a good job for me, but I did not and you should not use it as the final answer....it must be verified with real scale weights....I have never found scales that would allow athwart weights on each wheel....??!!

If you would like a copy message me and I will email.

My buddy was looking at one can't remember the model but it had a nice pull out rack system. Looked good for storing big plastic bins on.

Weight distribution is not nearly as critical concerning the handling with a 5th wheel as with a bumper pull trailer. The distribution may affect tire wear to some degree if the tire load ratings are questionable to begin with.
I pulled 5th wheel & gooseneck trailers of all shapes sizes & loads with no noticeable handling issues. Bumper pull TTs & loaded utility trailers are a different issue all together, load distribution definitely affects their handling.

We love our 326 rds and don’t think we can ever be without that extra storage again. We keep chairs, fishing poles, satellite dish, fire pit, bbq, and lighter stuff back there. I could probably actually use some more weight in the back after putting in two more 6 volt batteries in the front compartment and my spare tire in the basement. You’ll never regret having the extra space or a raised rear coach.
