No hot water all of a sudden?

So I have been leaving the water heater off when not needed, fire on the electric and propane together to get it hot quicker before showering or washing dishes, etc... If that red light ever goes on I just shut both off.

Today we turned it on, the wife did dishes as normal, later I saw the light on so I shut both off. About an hour after that I flip them both on again, 20 minutes later we have no hot water, like no water is coming out when opening the hot water in either kitchen sink, shower or bathroom sink. Any ideas?

Its way too warm and has been for the last week or so to be a freezing issue. There is a switch on the water heater behind the outside access panel on some kind of valve, I pulled it a little and water did come out so I think there is water in the heater.

There is a check valve on the back of the water heater on the outlet hose. Take it off and pull the guts out until you can get a replacement.

Sorry, the check valve is replaceable. It is a brass valve aprox 3" long and should be available at any RV dealer for less than $10.00.

This is almost exactly what i have, where is the check valve exactly? Is it the blue circle with the pin hanging off of it?

No , that is the high temperature/pressure relief valve. The check valve is on the back of the water heater above the water heater bypass valve. Be sure that all pressure has been released before attempting any plumbing repairs. Especially hot water.

It is the top fitting on the rear of the heater accessible from inside the trailer (Somehow) Your hearer probably only has one valve for bypass.

Here's a picture that has the valve marked. Make sure you drain the hot water heater to relieve pressure before you take the back connections off. You WILL get sprayed with boiling hot water if you don't.

Also, if you turn the winterizing valve to bypass the hot water heater, you should get cold water flowing to the hot water faucets. If you do, then it's the check valve, if you don't, it may be a supply problem further back in the system, but my bet (as with everyone else) is the check valve. They are about $15 at any RV supply store. I don't think you'll find one that will simply screw into the current plumbing at a big box store.

The check valve looks like a pipe nipple and is the first fitting on the hot water output.. I took the guys out of mine and added a three way valve to make the by-pass system. A lot of people have had the water heater check valves freeze up.

Not that it would resolve the current "no hot water issue" but removing the "guts" from the check valve, adding a cutoff valve to the hot water side, another to the cold water side and a third in the bypass hose between those two would also eliminate the cold surge when taking a shower.

yep, bypass got me cold water out of the hot faucet so thats good. water is off and about to pull the guts out of the check valve to get me through the next 2 days, missed the RV store by 20 min and they are closed Sun AND Mon, wth.

edit/update: OK, so i was not able to get the valve out but i was able to ninja the guts out of it while still in the WH so i got it working!

My question is if anyone has any better ideas than this to get this thing off (ie: brute strength and ignorance). my tools are all in storage so this is the best i have on hand and it wouldn't budge at all. i have seen a lot of people have trouble getting these out and sometimes they break.

If you want, just leave the check valve "guts" out and go on about your business. The only issue you're going to have is a cold splash of water in the shower if you use the showerhead cutoff while soaping up. Otherwise, you'd be none the wiser without the check valve. If the cold splash becomes an issue, you can add a valve in the bypass tube (the verticle 1/2" pipe that connects the cold and hot pipes when you winterize.

Sooner or later, you'd need to also add a valve between the hot water outlet and the bypass hose so you can pump antifreeze in the system wtihout backfilling the HWH. But for now, as long as you're not going to winterize, you really don't need the check valve except to not get chilled in the shower.
