Shocks for the Silverado

The good old truck has 117000 and I am looking to replace the shocks. From Bilstein to Rancho to KYB to Monroe, etc there are a few choices. Would there also be BIG differences in how they perform when towing? Would I see a difference between an expensive Bilstein and the Monroe?
Thanks for any input...

Bilstein 5100, I have tried them all over the years and the Bilstein win hands down.

I use Rancho since I like the ability to adjust them to my desired ride quality. Have had them on my last two TV and really like them.

Rancho. Bilsteins are very good but pricey.

^^^That!^^^

I've tried KYB and different Ranchos. The 5100 is hands down the best performing shock. Worth whatever the current price is.

Tried both. The Rancho adjustability of the 9000's was nice but you just put the Bilsteins on and forget them. Anything that lets me move on to the next thing is a big plus.

Another vote for Bilstein, have tried others and there will never be anything else on my trucks. BTW, if you still have the OE shocks on your truck, they wore out about 70,000 miles ago. When you pull them off, you will find that they compress, but don't rebound. Basically you don't have shocks on your truck right now so anything will be an improvement.

Bilsteins here, but I don't know much about any of them. I bought them because they were recommended, about $300 and then gave the neighbor kid $50 to install them. I put them on at about 50K or so and I couldn't really tell the difference. Ford's stock looked good.

The Bilsteins are the best and Ranchos (the best one) are pretty good. Monroe, not so much. I've never had luck with Monroe's at all.

The hard part with shocks on these heavy duty trucks is that most people don't notice what they do because of the heavy suspension components. That's why so many people are running around on shocks that no longer do their job. I'd be willing to bet that 75% or more of the trucks on the road have collapsed shocks. My experience and recommendations with shocks is simply this, Monroe shocks last about as long as OE, maybe 20-30k miles. Rancho shocks look nice, but don't last much longer, maybe 40k. Bilstein shocks have lasted me nearly 100k miles. The problem is most people don't pull shocks on a regular basis to check their dampening ability.

Monroes shouldn't even be a consideration. I don't think they're as good as stock, and stock aren't that great. My BIL installed KYBs on his pickup. Very disappointing. Ranchos have a lifetime warranty, as do the Bilsteins.

If the 5100's aren't available, get the 4600's. In reality, there isn't much difference in damping quality. The big difference with the 5100's is the zinc coating on the shock body to prevent the corrosion that comes when the paint chips off the shock body over time.

I looked at the more expensive shocks but stuck to an old and trusted name at way less http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....id=406&jpid=10

At this price I can afford to replace more often if need be...

Ride and performance towing our fifth wheel with these shocks is night and day difference.

The Bilsteins and Ranchos have a lifetime guarantee to the original buyer. Only have to buy them once, and they will last two or three times longer than the Monroes. Now, if you drove a Yugo on recently paved roadways, the Monroes might be justified. Considerable difference. Not even close.

Only trouble with changing shocks more often because of price is if you have a 1997 - 2010 Ford the rear shocks are a bear to change. Cutting torch time. I have done several. I would only want to do those once if possible. Good argument for Bilsteins. Don't have a Ford anymore so not concerned.

Nope I don't drive a Yugo. I drive a 2007 GMC Classic LBZ. Monroe works just fine. And my pocket book is a lot thicker. Nothing wrong with the higher priced shocks either. It's kind of like synthetic oil versus Dino oil. I run Rotella Dino.
