First 5er

Just got 2010 forest river surveyor 241rk. Picked up a used pullrite superglide 16k. When kingpin is completely in hitch, lock does not engage on its own. I took it to car wash and power washed it to remove gunk. Then relubed it. Any other thought, do the springs ever need changing? Thanks gunner

Welcome to the forum. If you have hitched too high or at an angle the jaws will not close. If you look in with a flashlight from the rear of your truck you should be able to see what is holding the jaws open. The handle has to be in the travel position before hitching. You do realize that Forest River is not made by Keystone???? Good luck with your new to you 5er and travel safely, Hank

Please be careful!! Much damage can be done if you do not verify that it is completely locked, (I'm sure you already know this though).

When doing your visual check of the jaws to make sure they are closed, is to paint the edges of the jaws or the edge of the bar white or bright yellow. If you see a band of white, the jaws are pretty much assured of being closed around the pin. Before painting, the jaws/bar needs to be thoroughly cleaned of all grease.

When doing my visual check, I always found that area around the hitch and jaws difficult to see clearly. The white paint on the jaws edge makes it much easier to see if they are closed and eliminates the need for a flashlight.

A word of caution: this is just a visual check --- don't forget to do a "pretend pull" before driving off.

I too picked-up a used Superglide. Before using it I was doing a clean-up/inpection and found the small springs on the latch mec. to be rusted.
I called PullRite and explained the issue and they sent me a Latch repair kit - no charge. Great Company.

Thanks everyone for the great answers. Sorry, I registered before realizing it is a Keystone forum.
