what me worry ?

Just a note to let you know that what you stress about rarely happens ! I purchased a Springdale 266RELL in Auburn, Wa. about 800 miles from where we live in southern Alberta. I have a 2004 GMC SLE ext cab 2 wd 1/2 ton, 5.3 with some adds, both the Z82/Z85 towing packages. I was so paranoid that my truck would not handle the trip home with the trailer which weighs in at 5670 lbs, many sleepless nights. But much to my surprise and relief it pulled like a trooper. First test was out of Auburn and up a 6% grade on Tiger Mountain, then the Snoqualmie Pass, then the Columbia River Gorge, then the Fourth of July in Idaho & Lookout Pass....stopped in Missoula for the night then across Macdonald Pass to Helena and up the I-15 into Canada. We left Auburn Tuesday morning at 9am and arrived home about 3pm Wednesday. I have a good WD hitch and friction sway controller and we had no sway, no trouble, pulled at 60 mph on the level on cruise with the tow haul on. SOOO....I guess if you stay within your limits a 1/2 ton is just fine !

Borrrrring…

I know how you feel. With my current setup, towing is pretty easy. Cruising along at 62mph for hours on end gets me impatient for my destination.

In 06 I went with a Sgt. from Ptld to Gold Beach with his assigned Chev p/u 4x4 a 04 or 05 1/2 ton. We trailered a 4500lb boat down and back about 14 hours of travel time at 65 mph mostly. 2 weeks later his truck had the transmission replaced, I asked if he had towed in tow/haul mode and he said he had not. I did not know exactly what happened, I would guess that maybe towing at 65 without putting it in tow/haul mode may have overheated the tranny. My chev truck 02 1/2 ton just had OD on/off, I always towed with it off. That truck was still fine at 95000 miles when turned back in.

tow/haul

I towed in tow/haul all the way........on the level in overdrive it ran around 1900 rpm at 60 mph...when pulling up a grade it would kick down and run up to 2500-3500 depending on the grade. ....only on the really bad spots like the Snoqualmie, Lookout and Macdonald Pass did it run up to about 4000 rpm....down the other side the tow/haul mode kept me from using the brakes a lot.
